Ludus literarius es la obra principal de John Brinsley (a. 1566-a. 1624), un pedagogo inglés que fue maestro de escuela en Ashby-de-la-Zouch, una pequeña población rural en el condado de Leicester. En esta obra, que aparece por primera vez en versión española traducida del original en inglés, su autor ofrece un minucioso programa, complementado con un método, de cómo ha de ser la enseñanza en las grammar schools, las únicas escuelas oficiales de su época. El nombre inglés de grammar school para esta institución escolar describe perfectamente cuál era su cometido fundamental: la enseñanza de la gramática, pero se sobreentiende, sin necesidad de mencionarlo, que se trata de la gramática del latín.

Ludus literarius is the major work of John Brinsley (b. 1566-b. 1624), an English educationalist who was a schoolteacher in Ashby-de-la-Zouch, a small rural town in the county of Leicester. In this work, which appears for the first time in a Spanish version translated from the original in English, its author offers a detailed program, complemented with a method, of what teaching should be like in the Grammar Schools, the only official schools of their time. The English name of Grammar School for this school institution perfectly describes what its fundamental mission was: the teaching of grammar, but it is understood, without the need to mention it, that it is the grammar of Latin.
