They should be pruned in late winter early spring, and up here in Chicago they flower in July. When you get a warm day in March it’s a good time to start pruning these types of hydrangeas. We want to try to make our pruning cuts with sharp tools that have been disinfected, we want to make the cut on a slight angle so that the water will run off in the rain. And we want to make that cut a quarter of an inch above where we see those buds.
