Golgi, professor of histology in Pavia, made many important histological studies and is well known for his discovery of the silver chromate methods of staining nervous tissue and described several previously unknown types of nerve cells. In 1906 Golgi shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Ramon y Cajal.
