Killarney, Dunnstown (nr Ballarat), was built in 1853 by Thomas O’ Loughlin, a gold miner who received the majority of his money from a wealthy uncle. He donated from 700 to 1,300 pounds to the Catholic Church to build a church and school. Due to his generosity to the church he was made a Count and was known as Count O’ Loughlin.
