a woman standing next to a bush holding a sign that says don't make this lilac
Kelly Welk on Instagram: "This is the biggest mistake I made when we first bought our home … I trimmed our lilac at the wrong time. And then the next season it barely bloomed! The best time to trim your lilac is right after it is done blooming. The rest of the summer the lilac works on putting on new growth. It is off of the new growth that the blossoms will come next spring. Another thing that lilacs need, is a chunk of a really cold weather, if it doesn’t get cold enough for long enough, they won’t bloom. Now that all of our lilac blossoms are done, it’s time to Prune! Here’s my system: - cut off all of the spent blooms, just behind the bloom head - then, if needed, bring the height of the lilac bush down, removing up to 1/3 of the plant’s height - lastly, cut out the largest three
a hand holding up a plant with the words grow free basil plants in front of it
Martha 🏳️‍🌈 |📍London on Instagram: "Don’t throw away your basil stems, grow free plants! Basil is usually treated as a annual short lived herb that you need to re sow regularly if you want a continuous supply so this is a great way to get a few extra plants to keep you supplied with basil. These cutting can easily run to seed - which is when they flower and produce seed after which the plants die. As with all herbs pinching the tips out rather than picking off individual leaves will get the plant to produce side shoots and keep it producing leaves rather than flowers for longer. You can also take cuttings from existing basil in the same way, just pop it in to water and pot up once it has roots. #basil #freebasil #growsupermarketherbs #basilhack"
three vases with plants in them sitting on a window sill
Martha 🏳️‍🌈 |📍London on Instagram: "A favourite tomato trick of mine. This isn’t just useful for getting free plants but also shows the classic method of pruning vining tomatoes by removing the side shoots. When pruned like this they are known as cordons. The aim is to direct energy in to a few select bunches of tomatoes that grow just on the main central stem. If left completely unpruned vining/indeterminate tomatoes will produce many smaller fruit on multiple stems and loads of leaves. Training as a cordon keeps them neat and tidy, but there are other ways to prune them. You can for example let a couple of stems grow and pinch out the rest which keeps things in order whilst giving you more potentially smaller fruit. Or you can just let them grow up and arch or inside and frame and cu

Martha 🏳️‍🌈 |📍London on Instagram: "An update on my supermarket mint. This is perhaps the easiest way to start growing edible plants. A lifetime supply of mint from a single packet. Easy to refresh and get growing again and will come back year after year. #gardeningforbeginners #growfood #mint"

I buy my seed potatoes online or from the garden centre so I know what variety I’m growing, how long they take and how much space they need.

Different varieties of potatoes are class as either first early second early or maincrop. First earlies are the quickest to grow giving you ‘new potatoes’
Second earlies take a few weeks longer and maincrop - think your big roasting / mashing spuds are maincrop and take 18-20 weeks. I grow mostly first and second earlies in containers because they are quick and don’t need as much space.

Leaving your potatoes in a light area to sprout is a process known as ‘chitting’ you don’t have to do it it just gets your plants growing quicker.

Yo

Nicole Johnsey Burke on Instagram: "Who wants more tomatoes!? 🙋‍♀️ When I first started gardening I followed the rules of cutting all the suckers and I ended up with a few tomatoes that I never got to eat (because the squirrels got them first!) So I started pruning the leaves instead of the suckers and then…soooo many tomatoes. There’s no wrong or right way to garden-just what works best for you. For me-more is more. a woman is tending to some plants in her garden with the caption growing cucumbers on a vertical string is very easy
Seattle Urban Farm Co | Garden Creators on Instagram: "String trellising cucumbers is very easy. Just clip or tie a string around the base of the plant and let it grow up. The cucumber will grab onto the string with tendrils, but it’ll sometimes try to grab nearby strings or plants, so we like to wrap it around the string once a week to keep it totally straight. This technique makes it easier to harvest, keeps the fruit and plant off the ground (reducing pest and disease issues), and it looks cool too. 🌱♥️ . . . #cucumbers #verticalgrowing #verticalgarden"
