1700s Shy Hands
Portraits of 18thC Gents afflicted with "Shy Hands" (SH). Peculiar to the Georgian era, a hand hidden in a waistcoat was a frequent pose in men's portraiture, supposedly providing an air of dignity and gravitas. SH was not restricted to one particular profession or class—Aristos, Judges, composers, writers, physicians, sheriffs, gentleman farmers (who knows who else!) suffered from Shy Hand. This tongue-in-cheek board celebrates them and their shy hands.
