How 6-minute billing units work

UK law firms record time in units of 6 minutes, meaning there are 10 units per hour. This convention is standard across the profession: it simplifies time recording, aligns with court cost assessments, and makes it straightforward to convert between time spent and fees charged.

Units = decimal hours × 10
Units = minutes ÷ 6
Decimal hours = units ÷ 10

For example: a 45-minute call is 7.5 units; a 1-hour 12-minute review is 12 units. Fractional units (e.g. 2.5) are entirely valid and commonly used.

Most fee earners mentally round up to the nearest unit. Some firms bill to the nearest half-unit. Either way, accurate recording starts with knowing the conversion, which is exactly what this tool provides.
