Recorded entirely live over two nights in Chicago, the performers within arm’s reach of each other, this self-titled recording by Mkl Anderson, Evan Hydzik and Mark Trecka, stylized as Drekka x [Hydzik + Trecka], is not dream music in the sense of being otherworldly, lost adrift on a cloud. Rather, it is hypnopompic. It is the sometimes terrifying gifts of liminal dreamstate visions embodied.

This recording settles comfortably alongside contemporaries like Pharmakon and Tim Hecker, or mighty predecessors like Coil and Simon Fisher Turner. Notably, it is not computer music. There was no trading files, there were no programs or applications. The trio made this music live using microphones, effects pedals, bells and other sundry objects, their bodies, and one 8-track performance sampler. The first night, they were alone in a concrete box. The second night, they were onstage in front of an audience.

These three artists have performed together in various combinations innumerable times over the past nearly 30 years. Hydzik and Trecka worked together extensively in Pillars and Tongues and both with Anderson before that in the mercurial noise folk project Static Films when Hydzik and Trecka were still teenagers. Trecka now performs mostly solo, often in collaboration with Hydzik, and has also collaborated with Midwife, Raven Chacon, Susan Alcorn, Sam Skarstad from Yellow Eyes, and many others. Trecka has contributed to many Drekka recordings over the past several decades and the two recently worked with Cinder (Cindytalk, This Mortal Coil) on the new collaborative project, Tremble With Joy. In addition to decades performing and recording as Drekka and running the underground experimental label Bluesanct, Mkl Anderson also fronted the death disco post-punk band Turn Pale. As Drekka he has released records on Dais, Fabrica, Morc, Bluesanct, Orb Tapes and others.
