The second installment in Dumb Ghost Records' 2024 covers EP series, Something I Learned is an EP of covers by the legendary songwriting duo from Hüsker Dü, Grant Hart and Bob Mould. It was performed, recorded, and produced by Owen the Descender (Cameron Hawk) while caring for his newborn son.
"Ezra was born in January of 2024, and before that, my wife and I were both combing our music collection to create a playlist for him that would introduce him to - you know - good kids music," Hawk said. "It was during that whole process that I realized it was going to be difficult to play these harshly-produced Hüsker Dü albums for my newborn. That got me going down the rabbit holes of Hart's and Mould's respective solo careers, and before I knew it, I was sitting down and trying to find the best way to interpret this stuff on solo acoustic guitar. Maybe it was a natural response to trying to find a way to lull the baby to sleep - who knows?"
Something I Learned follows January's split EP from Owen the Descender and Sweet Sweater titled Seedlings, which features covers from the Smiths, Camper Van Beethoven, the ACBs, and Gorillaz. Dumb Ghost plans to drop more releases in this series throughout the year.
