The pure joy of standing beneath these ancient trees, feeling the sunlight warm my upturned flower-face. The ecstatic freedom of running across the open plains with my tribe, footpads pounding the grass, lungs heaving, tongue lolling. The soaring feeling of my soul rising to trace the edge of jagged peaks against the sky. Whenever the mother calls, I will go to her; to the land I pledge my love, my life, my sword.

VANANIDR plays a powerful and melodic variant at the intersection of black and death metal. Somehow the mix seems timeless, neither bowing too deeply to the glorious 90s nor following current post-XY metal trends. The drums bang really well, and the sometimes very haunting guitars form a wonderfully atmospheric and dynamic complement. The vocals are rough but understandable and this results in catchy hits: the opener "Forest of Grief", the throttled "Tearing Skin" or the raging "Black Feathers".

Very atmospheric, a perfect winter soundscape. Each of the 5 pieces are their own distinct work, but they complement each other so well that it makes it a good hour of atmospheric black metal that you want to finish in one sit through (or winter hike).
