Secretsundaze joins the Helsinki based Echocentric family for their 20th edition by way of the ‘Flashlight’ EP. A break-neck fusion of the eclectic influences, from UK breakbeat hardcore to Italian progressive house, amassed from the career of the storied London based DJ, producer and curator.

The A-side opens with ‘Flashlight’ (Stripped) with clear intent. The track stylistically distills the previously stated influences combining Blues Party toasting and ethereal female vocals, underpinned by an incessant bass and driving breakbeats. ‘Flashlight’ (OG) leans more into the dramatic, layering striking stabs atop the already peaktime ready (Stripped) incarnation. Hotly-tipped emerging producer ODF contributes a remix that reimagines ‘Flashlight’ for sweaty basements, fusing rugged bass with precision-engineered club dynamics in his trademark tech-garage style.

On the flip we have ‘Style’. Using some of the same raw materials as ‘Flashlight’, ‘Style’ takes those elements and recontextualises them with a more refrained approach. Breaks still drive the track, but added into the mix are a Roland JV1080 guitar, soaring keys, an organ groove, heavy bass and niggly acid line. The impressive EP is complete with ‘Style’ (VIP) which edges the balearic tip one notch up with an extended keys solo for those daring eyes-closed, end-of-night moments.

The EP as a whole is an ode to the renowned Blues Dances of the 1980s, with the vocal samples coming from rare on-location party recordings from these illusive days. The influence of these Black British sound-system led parties on UK dance music culture is only starting to get fully recognised, playing an equal part in the development of dance music as the fabled trip to Ibiza in 1987. This is thoroughly argued and documented by Ed Gillet in his thrilling ‘Party Lines’ book, a must for anyone concerned with the roots of the music we love.
