Coba Coba is likely to impress if you’re all for having authentic nasi padang in Singapore. The founders initially started this to bring traditional Indonesian food to their families and friends, which eventually culminated in the opening of Coba Coba in 2014.

Another nasi padang place that has been around for a really long time is Rumah Makan Minang. The stall has been around since 1954, and its snaking queues are a testament to how great their nasi padang is.

Their Tahu Goreng ($5) is impressive, featuring a towering pillar of fried tofu topped with bean sprouts and cucumber, doused in a dark sweet soya sauce, and finished with crushed peanuts. If you want some fish to go along with your rice, try the Ikan Asan Pedas Set ($9.50), which comes with fish stewed in a spicy and tangy gravy with a side of eggplant, emping, and fried tofu.

Their Assam Pedas Fish is tangy and spicy, with a rich flavour that comes from the fish itself. With its bright yellow coconut-based sauce, the Ayam Panggang doesn’t appear to be too fiery, but take a bite and you’ll feel its burn in no time. Dishes including the BBQ Sundanese Chicken, which comprises Sundanese-style barbecue chicken marinated in signature spices, and the Lemak Siput Sedut, which features fresh sea snails in a spicy coconut gravy, are all moreish creations that will leave you wanting more.

There’s no doubt that Che Rose Nasi Padang serves up some excellent Chicken and Beef Rendang as the eatery is known to have one of the best rendang in Singapore. If you are familiar with Mohamad Nasir bin Mohamed or, as he is better known, M. Nasir, you’ll know that he is something of a renaissance man. The master of the Malaysian music industry is a singer-songwriter, composer, poet, producer, actor, film director and, more pertinently, the owner of Warung M. Nasir.

Within its bright red walls, the stall serves some fantastic Beef Rendang (price TBD), Ayam Gulai (price TBD), Sambal Goreng (price TBD) and more. You’ll be spoiled for choice with the large variety of spicy dishes on offer.

10. Rendezvous Restaurant Hock Lock Kee

As with many other picks on this list, Rendezvous Restaurant Hock Lock Kee is steeped in history, having been a dining spot for thousands of British troops stationed in Singapore during the 1940s. After the British left in the 1950s, the restaurant shifted its focus to serving the nasi padang that they are most known and loved for today.

Check out the restaurant’s Cuttlefish Sambal (from $6.20), Korma Chicken (from $9.90), and Fish Curry ($6.20) for a taste of their highly regarded Western Sumatran dishes. Their Beef Rendang ($6.20) is also touted as tender and not too greasy as well!
