There are many reasons why a lot of people avoid eating bread. Many of them do it because they think that bread has a lot of unnecessary carbs, while others point out its gluten content and how much they do not need gluten in their diets.

We don’t eat bread very often as it is acid forming and we try to stick to the 20/80 rule as much as possible. Living an alkaline lifestyle – mainly based on whole, plant-based foods – has enabled us to live a healthier and happier life.

If you are one of those people who want to reduce/eliminate bread from their diet, but would still like to enjoy a sandwich here and there, it is now possible for you to eat sandwiches without needing any bread.

Here are just some of the most fantastic no bread sandwich ideas you can do at home!

Try them and enjoy!

#1 Bell pepper sandwich

You think bell peppers are just for pizza decorations? You can actually use them as a substitute for bread when creating a sandwich. Cut the bell pepper just off to its sides so that you will have two flat surfaces which are just enough for them to carry something in the middle.

Just put other veggies, lean meats (turkey or chicken), cheese, or vegan alternatives (or all of them 😉 ) on top of one of the sides and place the other side on top of them, and you have a  bell pepper sandwich.

Moms have claimed that the bell pepper does not in any way deter their kids from eating the sandwiches, and even went as far as having school teachers actually recommend it during field trips.

#2 Lettuce wraps

Lettuce wraps are another great way to create no bread sandwiches. Take greens with big leaves such as kale, romaine lettuces, chard, iceberg lettuce. Add your favorite ingredients in the middle of a big leaf and drizzle with your favorite dressing. Wrap and enjoy! Simple as that.

#3 Sweet potato buns

Potatoes can also be used for your no bread sandwich ideas. In fact, this is probably one of the oldest tricks in the book. They are best when they are served as bread substitutes for hamburgers (because who doesn’t think burgers and fries don’t mix?).

Spiralize sweet potatoes (or cut into thin strips) and then cook them over medium-high heat. Season with herbs and spices of your choice and toss gently with tongs and cook until slightly softened. This will take about 3 minutes. Allow to cool and stir in an egg (flour works too). Add spirals to ramekins. Use a can or weight to press the spirals down. Place in the fridge if you are not planning to cook them straight away.

To cook: heat cooking oil over medium heat and turn ramekin upside down, tap on the bottom until the potato bun falls into the pan. Cook until slightly browned and crisp. This will take about 4-5 minutes. Flip and cook on the other side.

The easier way: cut sweet potato into big rounds, brush with cooking oil and season with your fav herbs. Grill in the oven until tender.

#4 Cucumber sandwich

Cucumbers may be small, but they are packed with nutrients that your body needs. If you ever feel a craving for something to eat but you feel like you do not want to eat something heavy, you can always resort to slicing up a cucumber into thin slices and putting a piece of cheese or a tomato in between two of those to form a very healthy yet delicious snack you can munch on.

#5 Omelette sandwich

This is probably the one that screams “breakfast” the most. Instead of cooking one giant omelet, create two smaller ones and fill them with any ingredient that you like. Not only is this meal packed with all the protein you will need for the day, but it also tastes really good.

This one was packed with cooked asparagus and green peas. Yum!

#6 Mushroom sandwiches

If you happen to have a mushroom that is big enough to hold a burger in between, although not really suggesting a really huge mushroom here, you can use them for your no bread sandwich ideas.

The mushroom provides heat protection and a unique flavor that can really spice up your appetite real quick.
