Dave Stryker • Strike Up The Band

Review
by Ken Dryden
Dave Stryker' fifteenth CD for Steeplechase obviously makes him one of producer Nils Winther's favorite musicians. For this 2003 session, the veteran guitarist is joined by pianist Xavier Davis, bassist Andy McKee, and drummer Billy Hart, producing a post-bop oriented session that has a number of surprises. Stryker's reworking of George Gershwin's "Strike Up the Band" reharmonizes the standard and adds quite a different perspective. He disguises the introduction to Sonny Rollins' "Airegin" with a tense vamp, with Davis shining in its up-tempo setting. Cole Porter's "I Love You" is another favorite of jazz musicians; the pianist's easygoing, slightly funky scoring of it gives it a fresh sound. Stryker penned three originals, including "What Is This?," a deliberately obvious reworking of the chord changes to "What Is This Thing Called Love." His swaggering "Blues Strut" and the demanding modal piece "Saints and Sinners" also produce inspired performances. Davis wrote the lyrical waltz "The Message," a low-key but infectious tune, while McKee opens his subtle"Peace Song" alone, with the band gradually making its entrance. Highly recommended!

Stryker compuso tres originales, incluido "What Is This?", una reelaboración deliberadamente obvia de los cambios de acordes de "What Is This Thing Called Love".

Dave Stryker • Prime

Fresh off their stint opening for Steely Dan, Stryker releases Prime—the first recording featuring his working trio. Along with Jared Gold on organ and McClenty Hunter on drums, Stryker offers eight new compositions and the beautiful standard “I Should Care.” From the burning title track “Prime” to songs penned for his first bossJack McDuff (“Captain Jack”and “Dude’s Lounge”) as well as “Mac” for his drummer and trio versions of “Hope” and “As We Were” from Stryker’s last album As We Are, Prime grooves from start to finish with the precision of a trio that has been road-tested for the last 10 years.

“In October of 2020 my long-standing trio of organist Jared Gold and drummer McClenty Hunter was booked to play a concert out of town. Due to the pandemic, in lieu of traveling we were given the opportunity to tape a show that could be streamed by the venue. Inspired by getting the chance to play together again after eight months in lockdown and knowing we would be in the studio, I was motivated to write an album of new music—my first featuring this trio exclusively. I decided we would record live in the studio with just one take per song and no overdubbing. The connection, interplay and fire of the group was captured on that day and we’re happy to now share with you the music of our trio in its Prime.” Dave Stryker

///////

Dave Stryker • Eight Track Christmas

Biography
Whether you’ve heard guitarist Dave Stryker fronting his own group (with 25 CD’s as a leader to date), or as a featured sideman with Stanley Turrentine, Jack McDuff, and many others, you know why Gary Giddins in the Village Voice calls him “one of the most distinctive guitarists to come along in recent years.” He was recently voted once again one of the Top Guitarists in the 2014 Downbeat Critics and Readers polls for the 7th time. His most recent CD “Eight Track” was also picked as one of the Top Albums of 2014 in the Downbeat Readers Poll.

Dave Stryker grew up in Omaha, Nebraska and moved to New York City in 1980. After establishing himself in the local music scene, he joined organist Jack McDuff’s group for two years 1984-85. When McDuff wasn’t on the road (literally traveling by van all over the country) they worked a steady four-night a week gig at Dude’s Lounge in Harlem. His first break, this turned out to be an invaluable experience, paying his dues night after night with the soulful jazz organist. It was at Dude’s Lounge that Stryker met tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine, who would occasionally sit in. After leaving McDuff, Turrentine asked Stryker to join his quintet. From 1986-1995 he played with the legendary saxophonist at all the major festivals, concert halls, and clubs throughout the world. He is featured on two Turrentine CD’s (Stanley recorded Stryker’s tune “Sidesteppin”). With Turrentine, Stryker was able to play with such jazz greats as Dizzy Gillespie and Freddie Hubbard. The ten years playing alongside the tenor legend helped Stryker realize the importance of having his own sound. Dave continued to work with Stanley and was with him during his final week at the Blue Note in NYC, when he passed in Sept. 2000.

Early on Stryker realized that as much as he loved playing standards and the jazz repertoire he had to have something of his own to give to the music. He feels that his writing combined with his playing is what shapes his musical expression. He has recorded and published over 130 of his own compositions. Eighteen of those compositions (from the first five SteepleChase CD’s) are compiled in the book : The Music of Dave Stryker (SteepleChase Music) which can be ordered on this website. Some of the other artists who have recorded his music are: Stanley Turrentine, Kevin Mahogany, Victor Lewis, and Steve Slagle. Dave continues to perform with The Dave Stryker Organ Trio, his Blue to the Bone Band, and The Stryker / Slagle Band. Recent gigs for The Stryker / Slagle Band have included a recent week at Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola at Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Monterey Jazz Festival, The Blue Note in Las Vegas, The Jazz Bakery in LA, and a 2003 tour of Japan.

Sideman work has included vocalist Kevin Mahogany’s group, with Dave writing and arranging music for Kevin’s Telarc release Pride and Joy and Another Time, Another Place on Warner Bros and tours of Europe, Japan, Brazil, Poland and Carnegie Hall. He also has worked with Blue Note saxophonist Javon Jackson and pianist Eliane Elias. He has appeared on over 50 CD’s as a sideman. As a producer, Stryker compiled the CD The Guitar Artistry of Billy Rogers which is the only existing record of the brilliant jazz playing of the late underground legend who was his friend, former teacher and member of the Crusaders. He has also produced “A Tribute to Grant Green” on Evidence Music.

Dave is the Adjunct Professor of Jazz guitar at Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, and at the John J. Cali School of Music at Montclair State University. He is passing along his experience by teaching both privately The Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshop, The Litchfield Jazz Camp, and the Jazzhouse Kids Workshop in Montclair NJ.

Dave sigue tocando con The Dave Stryker Organ Trio, su Blue to the Bone Band, y The Stryker / Slagle Band.

Dave Stryker • Blue Strike

Biography by Matt Collar
An adept jazz guitarist with a strong blues- and soul-influenced sound, Dave Stryker has worked as both a sideman and bandleader for decades. His playing style eschews the sharp, crystalline lines favored by guitar peers; he chooses instead to deliver an intriguingly veiled sound influenced deeply by the organ trios he's played in. He's toured and/or recorded with many musicians, including Jack McDuff, Stanley Turrentine, Jimmy Smith, Lonnie Smith, and Freddie Hubbard. 1992's Guitar on Top featured an all-star band that included Mulgrew Miller. The majority of his discography appears on Steeplechase. His celebrated recordings for the label include 1994's Full Moon, 1996's Blue to the Bone, 2004's Shades Beyond, and 2010's Keystone. Later dates appear on his Strikezone label. 2020's Blue Soul featured him with Bob Mintzer arranging and conducting the WDR Big Band. 2021's As We Are included John Pattitucci, Brian Blade, and Julian Shore. 2024's Groove Street featured Stryker's organ trio with Mintzer as a guest soloist.

Born in 1957 in Omaha, Nebraska, Stryker began playing guitar at age 10 by listening to records by the Beatles, Cream, and Johnny Winter. Soon, however, he was investigating the music of influential blues artists like Freddie King, as well as more heady jazz improvisers like Wes Montgomery, Kenny Burrell, and Miles Davis. By his teens, he was gigging regularly around Omaha, and in 1978, moved to Los Angeles where he studied for a time with guitarist Billy Rogers, and befriended, and landed a gig with Hammond B-3 organ boss Brother Jack McDuff.

After moving to New York City during the '80s, he toured for several years with McDuff's soul-jazz outfit, and in 1986, met Stanley Turrentine. Stryker spent the next decade touring with the saxophonist, during which time he developed significantly, coming into his own as a guitarist respected by his six-string peers and the jazz and blues worlds at large. As a solo artist, Stryker debuted in 1988 with First Strike on an independent label, leading a quartet with drummer Billy Hart, pianist/keyboardist Marc Cohen, saxophonist Steve Slagle, and bassist Ron McLure. In 1991 he signed with SteepleChase and issued Passage on SteepleChase, which also featured Joey Calderazzo, Adam Nussbaum, and others. From there, he delivered a steady stream of well-regarded albums on SteepleChase like Guitar on Top in 1992, 1993's Full Moon, 1994's Nomad, 1996's Blue to the Bone, and 1999's Blue to the Bone II. Stryker paid tribute to Davis with Shades of Miles in 2000 with added personnel including Larry Goldings on Hamond B-3, trumpeter Brian Lynch, and saxophonist Billy Drewes. 2001's Changing Times and 2005's Big City (the first of two albums on MelBay) showcased his eclectic brand of guitar-based blues, swing, New Orleans funk, soul-jazz, and rock. He followed with The Chaser in 2006. During this period, Stryker also appeared as a sideman on albums by Kevin Mahogany, James Williams, and Royce Campbell, and co-led several dates with saxophonist Steve Slagle. In 2010, he paid homage to longtime bandmate, drummer Tony Reedus (who died from a pulmonary embolism in 2008) with the organ-steeped One for Reedus, which also marked his return to SteepleChase. That same year he issued Keystone with drummer Quincy Davis. Another organ quintet session, Blue Strike, followed.

In 2014, Stryker launched Strikezone Records, kicking things off with Eight Track featuring vibraphonist Stefon Harris, organist Jared Gold, and drummer McClenty Hunter. Messin' with Mister T followed a year later, with guest spots from Eric Alexander, Jimmy Heath, Chris Potter, and many more. Following the sequel Eight Track II, he released the 2017 quartet session Strykin' Ahead and Eight Track III a year later. He released his first holiday album, Eight Track Christmas, in 2019. Saxophonist, composer, and arranger Bob Mintzer guested with Stryker's organ trios on several occasions in concert. The principal conductor of Cologne, Germany's world-class WDR Big Band, he got the idea that his jazz orchestra would be well served supporting Stryker's organ trio. He worked up new charts for then-recent Stryker tunes, covers of Marvin Gaye, Prince, and Jimmy Webb, and contributed his own "Aha." The set was released as Blue Soul in 2020 on Strikezone and credited to Dave Stryker with Bob Mintzer and the WDR Big Band -- Mintzer conducted and wrote the charts.

Following a European tour, he returned to the studio with his trio and guest saxophonist Walter Smith III for 2021's Baker's Circle. The following year, Stryker changed up his record making and composing formulas for As We Are. He reteamed with Pattitucci, Blade, and Shore and added a string quartet that included violinist Sara Caswell and cellist Marika Hughes. The album garnered almost universal acclaim for its advanced textures, dynamics, and control. Stryker wrote seven of the set's nine tunes, which also included one by Shore and a cover of Nick Drake's "River Man."

Stryker and company toured for most of 2023; he returned to the studio late in the year with his Gold and Hunter with Mintzer as a featured co-billed guest. Stryker composed three of the album's nine tracks, Mintzer, two more, and Gold, one. They filled out the set with covers of Harry Warren's standard "The More I See You," Wayne Shorter's jazz classic "Infant Eyes," and Eddie Harris' eternally funky "Cold Duck Time." Titled Groove Street, the album was released in January 2024.

Dave Stryker • Strykin' Ahead

Roger Farbey By ROGER FARBEY
July 13, 2017
Hot on the heels of his 2016 release, the soul and rock infused Eight Track II comes Dave Stryker's punningly titled Strykin' Ahead with a mix of standards and Stryker originals. Following the lively opener, "Shadowboxing," a Stryker original, comes a rather more sedate version of Wayne Shorter's "Footprints" followed by Stryker's "New You" in which both Steve Nelson and Jared Gold provide imaginative, swinging solos backed by McClenty Hunter's solid drumming. A dreamy interpretation of Billy Strayhorns "Passion Flower" is given a subtle bossa nova beat by Hunter.

"Strykin' Ahead" is a helter skelter affair where Stryker shows his mettle with a flurry of fast and fluid notes breaking out immediately after the head. To some extent Stryker sounds not unlike the late Johnny Smith in his considered and articulate style, which is no bad thing, but Stryker has his own unique voice too. Another Stryker original is the slow "Blues Down Deep" where the guitarist wrings out restrained emotion from his guitar. Clifford Brown's "Joy Spring" is a perfect example of just how well the organ, vibes and guitar gel together propelled by highly effective yet unobtrusive drums.

"Who Can I Turn To" by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley is afforded a delicate and respectful interpretation but Charlie Parker's (or Miles Davis's, depending on who you read) "Donna Lee" is a lively version with the guitar and vibes playing the famous boppy melody in unison, no easy task but it's executed with aplomb. Stryker's playing is characterised by warmth and articulacy and those traits extend to the whole of this very well-produced album.

Dave Stryker • As We Are

Tracks:
Pat Metheny has a section of his website entitled "Pat Recommends," where he discusses jazz guitarists whom he believes are "making the best music of their careers" on their recent recordings. Dave Stryker is one of the musicians Metheny mentions, and this is certainly an accurate assessment. Dave Stryker has established himself as one of the foremost guitarists in jazz, and with As We Are, he adds another important contribution to his discography.

Stryker has a phenomenal work ethic. He's been playing professionally since the seventies, and has worked with an impressive list of artists, including Jack McDuff, Stanley Turrentine, Eliane Elias, and many others. He's also had a successful solo career, including his popular Eight Track (2016) series, Blue Soul (2020) with Bob Mintzer and the WDR Big Band, and Baker's Circle (2021), all on Strikezone Records. Along with these accomplishments, he is an Adjunct Professor of Jazz guitar at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University, and the John J. Cali School of Music at Montclair State University. He is also actively involved in providing online jazz guitar tutorials.

As We Are marks Stryker's 34th album as a leader, and it proves that he is a continuously evolving artist whose music just seems to get better with each release. Here he teams up with bassist John Patitucci, pianist Julian Shore, and drummer Brian Blade. Along with these musicians, Stryker has added a string quartet, featuring Sara Caswell and Monica K. Davis on violin, Benni von Gutzeit on viola, and Marika Hughes on cello.

Although primarily recognized as a guitarist, As We Are highlights Stryker's talents in composition as well. Almost all of the selections included are Stryker originals, and they show a slightly different side of his music. While many of his past recordings feature a groove-oriented small group setting, the instrumentation here relies heavily on string arrangements. Obviously, incorporating strings into jazz is nothing new, but Stryker's approach is somewhat different from many traditional string arrangements. As he explains, "I always wanted to do something where strings would really be integrated into the music, not a coloring or sweetening that comes later."

The interaction of the string quartet with the traditional group format helps give the album a slight film soundtrack feel, and the artwork seems to reflect its musical narrative. The cover shows what appears to be a series of windows, drawing the eye from one room to another. Each song seems to tell its own story, but they are all connected through a central thread.

The compositions featured on As We Are show a wide range of jazz influences. From the Brazilian flavors of "Hope" or "Saudade" to "One Thing At A Time," with its 60s classic Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter undertones, the album has many effective nuances. Along with these influences, Stryker also includes a beautiful cover of Nick Drake's "River Man."

Throughout the album, the level of musicianship is impressive. Each of the players here is in top form. Stryker's guitar technique is excellent as always, and even though the musical style might be a bit different from what some might expect from him, this album is among his finest achievements. As Stryker points out, "it's my dream project," and As We Are is a deeply satisfying album on many levels. This is definitely one of the most thought-provoking and beautifully-crafted albums to come along in recent times.

Dave Stryker • Groove Street
