Jack McDuff • The Re-Entry

 

Originally recorded and released on Muse Records in 1988, was Brother Jack McDuff's first recording after a four-year absence from the studios. This, the first of the two Muse dates McDuff recorded with producer/tenor man Houston Person, also features Ron Bridgewater on tenor, Cecil Bridgewater on trumpet, John Hart on guitar and Grady Tate on drums.
It's a fairly typical Muse program of blues and ballads with the expectedly clean production perfected by Person and engineer Rudy Van Gelder. Predictably, it's McDuff's blues themes that have the most flavor and excitement: witness "Walking The Dog" and "Cap'n Jack" (as he's chosen to be called recently). The R&B swing of McDuff favorite "Electric Surfboard" has its moments; but it's been heard to better effect before. A cover of Quincy Jones' ultra-poppish "One Hundred Ways" (listed as "One Hundred Years" on the cover) is a throwaway and a fireside reading of David Raskin's "Laura" is a pretty feature for the horn players.

Guitarist John Hart's Indivisible is full of constant surprises. Hart, bassist Bill Moring, and drummer Tim Horner had worked together on and off for 20 years at the time of this recording and on a regular basis since 2000, so the musical communication between the musicians is quite impressive.
On some selections, Hart plays in a laid-back introspective post-bop style a bit reminiscent of Jim Hall and to a lesser extent John Scofield. But other numbers are more rock-oriented (while still being jazz) à la John Scofield. "Awakening" sounds a bit like flamenco, there are hints of Indian music on some numbers, and "The Thing" is mostly a fairly free improvisation. Listeners hearing this CD for the first time will never be quite sure what will happen next style-wise, and, even after listening to it multiple times, there will still be surprises to discover.
This is an intriguing set of explorative music, one of John Hart's best to date.

Akiko Tsuruga • Commencement

Procedente de Osaka, Japón, la organista y pianista, ha sido un pilar en la escena del jazz de Nueva York desde 2001. Esta joven y talentosa organista comenzó a tocar el órgano a la edad de tres años y lanzó su carrera en el jazz inmediatamente después de graduarse de la Escuela de Música de Osaka. This date doesn't pack the same punch as McDuff's 1960s classics, but is mostly enjoyable despite some annoying trumpet from Joey DeFrancesco (a fine organist and McDuff fan) and McDuff's own arrangements for the large band backing him. Sometimes the two-trumpet/two-sax/trombone frontline seems more of a burden than a help. They are good players, but they aren't given enough to do to be exciting and sometimes just seem in the way. While it's great to hear McDuff back on the Hammond B-3, this will not make anyone forget his Prestige dates with George Benson.
