Biography
Önder Focan started music by playing mandolin at the age of 8. He switched to guitar at 15 and concentrated on jazz in 1975. Being mainly self- taught, he has become a jazz musician most sought after as a guitarist, player, composer arranger and lyrics writer. In 1986, he got married to Zuhal Focan withn whom founded Nardis Jazz Club in 2002.

Focan improved his skills in music and teaching by attending seminars by IAJE (International Association for Jazz Musicians). From 1996 to 1999, he conducted Jazz Ensemble courses at the Istanbul Academy. In 1997, he performed in the Guitar Night that was organized by MIDEM (Marché International du Disque et de l’Edition Musicale) with 11 international guitarists representing Istanbul Culture and Arts Fund (IKSV).

Between the years of 2001 and 2005, he taught harmony classes at Mujdat Gezen Art Centre where he was elected as the best artist in Western Music in 2000. At Yildiz Technical University, he lectured “Jazz Styles in Analysis” in 2003-2004 and also “Jazz Guitar” in 2006-2007.

Since 2002, he has been the art director of Nardis Jazz Club, where he organizes concerts for more than 315 musicians and accompanies them on stage every year. Some of these musicians are Benny Golson, Kurt Elling, Dianne Reeves, Al Foster, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Roy Haynes, Tierney Sutton, Kenny Drew Jr, Roseanne Vitro, Christian Mc Bride, Roy Hargrove, Ron Carter and majority of top local musicians.

Always valuing and recognizing social responsibility projects, Focan has directed and the coordinated IPMN (Istanbul – Pori Music Networking). This project supported jazz education, enabling young musicians to have experience on stage in both cities, Istanbul and Pori.

He has released 13 CD’s. In 1998, featuring the great drummer Bill Stewart and Hammond B3 player Sam Yahel, his album

“Beneath The Stars” honored him as the first Turkish Jazz musician to have released an album on Blue Note label. He has participated in 94 Festivals, while 43 have taken place in various cities in Turkey, the other 51 have been in other countries such as the USA (Los Angeles), France, Germany, China, Malta, Italy, Brazil, Senegal, Indiana, Finland, Australia, Jordan, Hungary, Switzerland, Croatia and Estonia.

Entre 2001 y 2005, impartió clases de armonía en el Centro de Arte Mujdat Gezen, donde fue elegido mejor artista de música occidental en 2000. En la Universidad Técnica de Yildiz, impartió clases de "Estilos de Jazz en Análisis" en 2003-2004 y también de "Guitarra de Jazz" en 2006-2007.

Desde 2002, es director artístico del Nardis Jazz Club, donde organiza conciertos para más de 315 músicos y los acompaña en el escenario cada año. Focan has given concerts at festivals in North America, Europe, West Africa, Brazil and the Middle East.

With his wife Zuhal Focan, he founded the Nardis Jazz Club in Istanbul's Beyoğlu district in 2002. In addition to Turkish musicians, numerous international jazz stars such as Benny Golson, Dianne Reeves, Al Foster, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Roy Haynes and Ron Carter have performed there. The name "Nardis" refers to a composition by Miles Davis. The concept of the club is open to all varieties of jazz. The musician's wife, Zuhal Focan, is also editor-in-chief of the glossy magazine Jazz, which is published quarterly in Turkish and English.

Focan has given concerts at festivals in North America, Europe, West Africa, Brazil and the Middle East.

With his wife Zuhal Focan, he founded the Nardis Jazz Club in Istanbul's Beyoğlu district in 2002. In addition to Turkish musicians, numerous international jazz stars such as Benny Golson, Dianne Reeves, Al Foster, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Roy Haynes and Ron Carter have performed there. The name "Nardis" refers to a composition by Miles Davis. The concept of the club is open to all varieties of jazz. Önder Focan (Nacido en 1955,8,24). Es un músico, compositor e ingeniero mecánico turco. Tiene 13 álbumes. Ha tocado en festivales de jazz de todo el mundo.

Focan empezó a tocar la mandolina a los ocho años. A la edad de 15 años cambió a la guitarra y se concentró en el jazz desde 1975. El artista autodidacta ha publicado 13 álbumes bajo su propio nombre desde 1994.  Después de asistir a seminarios en la Asociación Internacional de Educadores de Jazz, dirigió cursos para grupos de jazz en la Academia de Estambul a partir de 1996. Luego enseñó en el Centro Cultural Müjdat Gezen y en Yıldız Teknik Üniversitesi.
Carrera musical

En 1997 actuó con Jan Ackermann, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Terje Rypdal, Noël Akchoté, Harald Haerter y otros guitarristas en la Noche de la Guitarra del MIDEM en Estambul. En 1998 fue el primer músico turco en grabar un álbum para Blue Note Records, Beneath the Stars con Bill Stewart y el organista Sam Yahel . En 2001 estuvo en el estudio de grabación con David Friesen para grabar el álbum Reminescence . En 2003 grabó el álbum Spontaneous International Friends para Konnex Records con Ernst Bier y Stefan Weeke . El baterista Bier ya había acompañado una gira por Turquía con el Önder Focan Quartet en 1997. También apareció con Ron McClure, Aaron Scott, Al Foster, Brian Lynch, Ted Curson y Anne Czichowsky . Focan ha dado conciertos en festivales de América del Norte, Europa, África Occidental, Brasil y Oriente Medio.

Con su esposa Zuhal Focan, fundó el Nardis Jazz Club en el distrito Beyoğlu de Estambul en 2002.
