Jean-Paul Bourdier [Body Painting, Land Art, Fotografía]

Tal vez lo más interesante de la obra de Bourdier es que aún cuando puede parecer un trabajo típico de la era digital, en realidad es lo contrario. Todo lo que se ve está ocurriendo ante la cámara, y los instrumentos del fotógrafo no son mucho más que paisaje, cuerpos, pintura y una cámara.

Perhaps the most interesting thing in Bourdier's work is that even though it looks like a typical work of the digital era, it's actually the opposite. Everything you see is happening in front of the camera, and the photographer's tools are not much more than landscape, bodies, paint and a camera.

Jean-Paul Bourdier

Jean-Paul Bourdier es un fotógrafo de origen francés que reside en California. Es el autor de "Leap Into the Blue (Salto en el Azul)", 2013, "Bodyscapes (Paisajes corporales)", 2007 (Introducción y DVD de Trinh T. Minh-Ha), co-autor con Trinh T. Minh-Ha de "Arquitectura Vernácula de África Occidental", 2011, "Habiter un monde (Habitar un mundo)", 2005, "Drawn from African Dwellings (Extraíde de viviendas africanas)", 1996 y "Espacios Africanos", 1985. Ha sido también diseñador de producción para siete películas y co-director de dos dirigidas por Trinh T. Minh-ha.

Ha ganado los premios Guggenheim, American Council of Learned Societies, NEA, Graham, UC President's Humanities, y Getty.

Es profesor de Arquitectura, Fotografía y Estudios Visuales en UC Berkeley.

"(En las ideas para mi trabajo) hay básicamente tres tipos de situaciones: primero, me inspiro en el acto por el entorno; segundo, mis amigos me sugieren ideas, o llegamos juntos a ellas o tercero, trabajo en bocetos para lugares específicos."

"En los dos años pasados estuve mayormente inspirado por las obras de pintores antiguos, pero hace diez años estaba completamente absorbido por los colores y patrones de los peces. A veces las divisiones sociales o la explotación de la tierra son el núcleo de mis preocupaciones, pero también recuerdo haber trabajado varios años con temas tales como la unidad del cielo y la tierra, la muerte, los cuerpos en vuelo. Ahora, estoy caminando el sendero de los ancestros."

"Como seres humanos, experimentamos la gravedad como un principio ordinario en nuestras vidas. Somos a la vez éste cuerpo pesado y algo más vasto que excede cualquier etiqueta. La ciencia nos ha mostrado que la materia está vacía.

La mayoría de los 50 amigos que vienen conmigo al desierto son gente corriente; muy pocos han estado relacionados con deportes o danza.

Hay unas cuantas maneras en las cuales uno puede flotar en el espacio. Me tomó alrededor de 5 años resolver éste simple enigma, y no me gustaría privar a los lectores del placer de resolverlo por sí mismos. Dicho ésto, muchos de mis amigos se arriesgaron realizando vuelos sin ninguna habilidad especial."

"Veo la arquitectura como una forma de mediar entre el cielo y la tierra, y podría decir lo mismo de la práctica del yoga, la danza u otras artes de performance. Quizá porque tengo formación como arquitecto, mi mente está obsesionada por encontrar algún tipo de orden en el mundo que me rodea para balancear fuerzas complementarias: alto y bajo, izquierda y derecha, duro y blando, vida y muerte, y así sucesivamente.

En mi trabajo, el primer principio ordinal tangible de las líneas es la línea del horizonte (cuyo espectro es el marco fotográfico); el primer principio ordinal de los colores es el cielo, y un principio máximo de mi trabajo presente es mi relación con lo que llamo nuestros ancestros, mientras continúo explorando mi relación con geometrías, compañerismo y la ligereza del ser. Parte de la red de relaciones que tenemos con el mundo es el reino de los ancestros (estoy desarrollando ésta idea para mi próximo libro). Éstos "ancestros" son los pintores que me han llegado a lo más hondo y a quienes quiero rendir tributo, a través de diversas pinturas o construcciones alusivas a sus trabajos."

"A menudo me encanta imaginar que tengo algún tipo de control, pero he llegado a la conclusión de que tan sólo soy el conductor de miles de fuerzas que están participando en el trabajo. Incluso mis bocetos y deseos están moldeados por miles de fuerzas, y por ende la obra está continuamente haciéndose a sí misma. Es un poco como planificar una comida; tú puedes tener todos los ingredientes, pero el sabor es imprevisible."

"[About the ideas for my work] There are basically three types of situations: first, I am inspired on the spot by the environment; second, my friends suggest ideas, or we come up with them together; or third, I work on sketches in advance for specific places. For my next shoot for example, I have to work for more than six months, everyday in my spare time, adding a few sketches in my drawing books."

"In the past two years, I was mostly inspired by old painters’ works but ten years ago I was totally absorbed by colors and patterns on fishes. Sometimes social divisions or the exploitation of the land are at the core of my preoccupations but I also remember working several years with such themes as the unity of heaven and earth, death, the flying body. Now, I am walking on the path of the ancestors."

"As human beings, we experience gravity as a fundamental ordering principle in our lives. We are both this heavy body and something vaster that exceeds anything we can label. Science has shown us that matter is empty. ?

Most of the more than 50 friends who have come with me into the desert are “regular” people; a small number have been involved in sports or dance. ?

There are a few ways through which one can float in space. It took me over five years to resolve this simple enigma, and I would not like to deprive your readers from the pleasure of solving it themselves. This said, many friends take risks and perform flights without any particular skills."

"I see architecture as a way to mediate between heaven and earth, and I could say the same about the practice of yoga, dance, or other performance arts. Perhaps because I have been trained as an architect, my mind is obsessed with finding some kind of order in the world around me to balance complementary forces: high and low, right and left, hard and soft, life and death, and so on. ?

In my work, the tangible first ordering principle of lines is the horizon line (whose specter is the photographic frame); the first ordering principle of colors is the sky, and a major ordering principle of my present work is my relation with what I call our ancestors, while I continue to explore my relationship with geometries, companionship, and the lightness of being. ?Part of the web of relationships we have with the world is the realm of the ancestors — I am developing this notion in my upcoming book. These “ancestors” are the painters who have touched me deeply who I would like to pay homage to, through diverse paintings or constructed allusions to their work."

"I often love to imagine that I am somewhat in control, but I have come to realize that I am just a conduit for thousands of forces that are making the work. Even my sketches and desires are molded by thousands of forces, so the work is continuously making itself. It is a bit like planning a meal; you may have all the ingredients, but the taste is unforeseen."

Trinh T. Minh-ha, nacida en 1952, es una cineasta independiente, feminista, teórica post-colonial, escritora, compositora y profesora vietnamita. Imparte cursos que tratan acerca de cómo las políticas de género están relacionadas con las políticas culturales, el post-colonialismo, las teorías críticas contemporáneas y las artes. Sus seminarios se centran en la teoría crítica de la investigación, políticas culturales, teoría feminista, "Tercer cine", teoría del cine y estética, la Voz en contextos sociales y creativos y lo autobiográfico.

Ha estado haciendo cine durante más de 30 años y es conocida por sus películas "Reassemblage" (1982) y "Surname Viet Given Name Nam" (1985).

Ha recibido varios premios y reconocimientos, incluído el Maya Deren del "American Film Institute’s National Independent Filmmaker" y becas de la Fundación John Simon Guggenheim. Sus obras han sido objeto de más de 20 retrospectivas.
