La Case ja porta anys en els escenaris i la gravació que la va donar a conèixer a un més ampli public va ser l'àlbum Blacklisted de 2002 on apareix Howard Helb entre altres convidats.
Ara arriba sota la seva producció amb nou disc on els primers temes (per mi la millor part del disc) recorden els moments pop dels seus treballs amb els The New Pornographers.
Similituts a la Rickie Lee Jones, la Rosanne Cash amb un petit toc de Costello no falten i arriben amb moments prou destacats com aquest imponent Wreck o Destination, però també trobem cançons que tenen un punt apagat i uniforme, sobretot la segona part del disc.
"Neon Grey Midnight Green demonstrates that Neko Case remains fully engaged in creating music that is entirely her own. Her production here is especially noteworthy, as she works with the musicians of the PlainsSong Chamber Orchestra, a new sound for her, in seamless harmony with the rest of the group. The push and pull between Case’s desire to use unconventional songwriting ideas but continue to rely heavily on strong melodies makes this a fascinating record. It’s a strong contender for one of the year’s best albums."
