This work is composed from recordings made in College Valley in North Northumberland (England, UK) on a field recording expedition in May 2015. Situated on the northern edge of the Cheviot Hills, College Valley is a haven for wildlife and vegetation and the perfect location for wildlife sound recording. On this particular weekend, the weather was not conducive to dawn choruses but instead displayed spectacular winds which were ever present and consequently a feature in all recordings.

“Aeolian” celebrates the remoteness of the valley: still but never quiet. The burn rushes along the valley, penetrating the aural landscape with its monotony. The driving wind rarely eases, speeding through the desolate expanse. Small birds, a cuckoo, emptiness. Fences reveal their internal harmonies singing louder as the wind picks up.

“Aeolian” was realized in 2015-16 at EMS (Stockholm, Sweden) and the Electroacoustic Music Studios of the University of Birmingham (England, UK). It premiered on April, 30, 2016 during the BEAST FEaST festival in Birmingham. Thanks to Chris Watson and Jez Riley French for an inspiring field recording weekend.

Cette œuvre est composée d’enregistrements réalisés à College Valley dans le North Northumberland (Angleterre, RU) lors d’une expédition d’enregistrements in situ (field recordings) en mai 2015. Située à la limite nord des collines de Cheviot, College Valley est un paradis pour la faune et la flore. C’est aussi l’endroit idéal pour réaliser des enregistrements en nature. Ce weekend-là, le temps n’était pas propice aux chorales de l’aube, mais il mettait en vedette des vents spectaculaires, toujours présents et, par conséquent, entendus sur tous les enregistrements.

«Aeolian» célèbre l’éloignement de la vallée, calme mais jamais tranquille. Le ruisseau court au fond de la vallée, pénétrant le paysage sonore de sa monotonie. Le vent puissant faiblit rarement, semblant prendre de la vitesse dans cette étendue désolée. De petits oiseaux, un coucou, le vide. Les clôtures révèlent leurs harmonies intérieures en chantant plus fort lorsque le vent se lève.
