Attested in 11th century Latin documents in forms such as Valleolide and Valledolidi. The beginning corresponds to valle (valley) and the ending seemingly to Olid, a known adaptation of the Arabic name لوليد (Walīd). The additional /-d-/ would in that case represent a possessive (de).
