Etymology 2
[edit]
Borrowed from Late Old Swedish kumin, from Old High German kumin and/or Old French cummin, from Latin cuminum, from Ancient Greek κύμινον (kúminon), ultimately of Semitic origin.
Noun
[edit]kumina
- caraway, Persian cumin (plant in Apiaceae family, Carum carvi)
- Synonym: maustekumina
- caraway (the seeds of that plant, used as spice)
Usage notes
[edit]cumin in Finnish is juustokumina, not kumina; that makes this word a false friend.
