Appearance
Finnish
[edit]Etymology
[edit]The standard vernacular form of Latin Albinus, partly merged with Germanic ( = Alvin). Sometimes also derived from Albert and Alfred.
Pronunciation
[edit]Proper noun
[edit]Alpo
- a male given name
- 1959, Väinö Linna, Täällä Pohjantähden alla 1, WSOY, published 1965, page 101:
- Toiseksi sinä muutat nimesi, etu- ja sukunimesi, suomalaiseksi. Albin-nimen saat pitää entiselläään, koska sille ei löydy suoraa vastinetta, koska tuo Alpo, jota jotkut suosittelevat ei ole luonteva.
- Second, you'll change your name, both the first and last name, to something Finnish. You can keep Albin because there isn't a Finnish equivalent. Some people say Alpo, but that doesn't really work.
- 2011 Johanna Sinisalo, Enkelten verta, Teos, →ISBN (tr. by Lola Rogers 2014) pages 21-22:
- Kun Ari (jota, paradoksaalista kyllä, en taas oikein koskaan osaa nimittää "isäksi") kävi lomillaan Amerikasta, hän jaksoi aina kertoa satunnaisille kahvivieraille, että Alpo oli Amerikassa koiranruoan nimi.
- When Ari (whom I, paradoxically, have never managed to call Dad) came to visit from America he always managed to mention to people who happened to stop for coffee that in America Alpo is a brand of dog food.
