From Proto-Brythonic *Iwerðon, from Proto-Celtic *Φīweryū (compare Cornish Iwerdhon, Breton Iwerzhon, Old Irish Ériu, Middle Welsh Iwerð (Irish Sea)), from Proto-Indo-European *piHweryon-, from *piHwer- (fat) (compare Ancient Greek πίειρα (píeira, fertile), Sanskrit पीवर (pī́vara, fat, plump, robust)).
