is this really common in the US?

the Harris campaign was using coconuts as their emblem on social media for months and i wasnt even aware it had any derogatory senses until i stumbled across a post on social media today from Britain. if coconut were a derogatory term in the US i';d think i'd have heard of it at least once during the Harris campaign.
