[edit]From Middle High German derren, from Old High German derren, from Proto-Germanic *þarzijaną, from Proto-Indo-European *torséyeti (“to make dry”). Cognate with German dörren, Icelandic þerra; also Latin torreō (“I scorch, burn”).
