[edit]From Old Norse leir (“clay, mud”), from Proto-Germanic *laiza- (“clay”), probably from Proto-Indo-European *h₂leyH- (“to smear”). Compare dialectal English lair (“a bog, a mire”). Cf. Danish ler, Norwegian Nynorsk leire and Swedish lera.
