From Old High German turran, from Proto-Germanic *durzaną, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰers-. Cognate with Low German dören, English dare, but also with Ancient Greek θρασύς (thrasús), Lithuanian drįsti, Russian дерза́ть (derzátʹ).
