Equivalent to torft +‎ -ig, from Old Swedish thorftogher, thørftugher, from Old Norse þurftugr, from Proto-Germanic *þurftiz. Cognate of Gothic 𐌸𐌰𐌿𐍂𐍆𐍄𐍃 (þaurfts), Old Saxon thurftig, German dürftig. Doublet of tarvlig.
