[edit]From Proto-Semitic *ʔahl-. Note that this Hebrew form is peculiar to the Tiberian vocalization. The Palestinian vocalization points to אַהֶל (ʾáhel) instead, truer to the vowel in every other known cognate.

- tent (a pavilion or portable lodge consisting of skins, canvas, or some strong cloth, stretched and sustained by poles, used for sheltering people from the weather)
- (Judaism) A collective term for all that covers a dead body or that a dead body covers; used in legal discussions of purity and impurity.
