Glyph origin

[edit]

Phono-semantic compound (形聲形声, OC *hŋaːʔ) : semantic (water) + phonetic (OC *hŋaʔ).

Etymology

[edit]

The two pronunciations have the same etymology but later split into two different pronunciations, with pronunciation 2 becoming specific for place names.

There is a legend that when Qianlong Emperor visited Xushuguan, he mispronounced this character using the 有邊讀邊有边读边 (yǒu biān dú biān) method. As a result, people pronounced the place name following the emperor.
