The Women's Premier League (WPL) is a women's T20 cricket franchise league of India, planned to start in March 2023. It was founded by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Arun Singh Dhumal is its present chairman.[citation needed]
History
Women's T20 Challenge was the predecessor of this tournament, which started as a one-match tournament. Then in 2018 it expanded to a three-team, three-match competition later on. The motivation for the WIPL is the significant growth of women's cricket in India. In October 2022, BCCI announced considering a 5 team tournament, to be conducted in the month of March-2022.[1] Inaugural season of this tournament will be played in the month of March-2023.[2]
Administration
IPL's headquarter is situated inside Cricket centre at the Wankhede Stadium in Churchgate, Mumbai. The WIPL Governing Council is responsible for all the functions of the tournament. The members are:
- Arun Singh Dhumal – Chairman
- Jay Shah – BCCI Secretary
- Ashish Shelar – BCCI Treasurer
- Avishek Dalmiya – Member
- Pragyan Ojha – Indian Cricketers' Association's representative
- CM Sane – Comptroller and Auditor General of India nominee
Organisation
Tournament format
WPL (Women's Premiere League) is based on Indian Premier League's format. There will be 5 teams playing in the tournament, all of them will face each other in a double Round Robin league. This will be followed by the knock outs.[3]
Stadiums
All the games of 2023 season will be played in Mumbai city of Maharashtra state, in Brabourne Stadium and DY Patil Stadium.[4]
Player acquisition, squad composition and salaries
Some of the team composition rules (as of 2023 season) are as follows:
- The squad strength must be 18 players, with a maximum of 6 overseas players.
- Salary cap of the entire squad must not exceed ₹12 crore (US$1.4 million).
- Under-19 players cannot be picked unless they have previously played first-class or List A cricket.
- A team can play a maximum of 5 overseas players in their playing eleven, four of whom may come from Full Member nations and the fifth from an Associate Member nation.[3]

Financials
Profit sharing
In upcoming 15 years BCCI will share 80% profit to franchise owners for 5 years initiating from 2023, after that it will share 60% in next 5 and then 50% in 5 years. They will share money from Central licensening rights : 80%. Franchises will also get money through tickets selling, advertising.[4]
Broadcasting
In January, 2023, Viacom 18, had acquired the global media rights for TV and digital broadcast for the inaugural women's IPL under a five-year contract beginning in 2023 for an amount ₹ 951 crore.[5][6] It will be broadcast on Sports18 tv channel and Jio Cinema app in India, owned by Viacom 18.
