App publisherMexicoCame off AdButler in 2024 · still serving

Ran a per-request plan and needed custom targeting plus API access. Now serving in-app with custom targeting, advanced analytics and the full platform API.

Our volume was small but scaling. We needed API access and custom targeting, as well as gradual increase of ad requests. On our previous provider, those were add-ons. On Epom they were just in the $250 plan. Two years later we still haven't bought a single add-on.

What Both Solutions Cost
at 10M and 50M a Month

Epom charges per impressions/mo and follows an all-inclusive approach. AdButler prices by ad requests, caps advertisers and user seats per tier, and offers add-ons for some essential features.

How the numbers add up

At 10M a month, geographic targeting adds $1,100, API access $550 and a named account manager $1,375 — about $3,707 in total against Epom’s $250. At 50M their Advanced plan absorbs the API and formats, so the same setup lands near $4,088 against roughly $2,000. Below 1M requests with none of that, AdButler is cheaper at $179, its white-label domain starts at $59 against Epom’s $250, and it forecasts inventory on every tier where Epom does not forecast at all.

Two Years On,
Still on the Entry Plan

App publisherIn-app inventoryOn Epom since August 2024

Before

AdButler, on a per-request plan. They wanted custom targeting, advanced analytics and API access, and on their tier each of those was a separate line on the invoice rather than part of the plan.

Now

Ran the full 14-day trial and moved to production ASAP. Two years later they are still on the entry plan by having all they need — custom targeting, advanced analytics and the platform API were all inside it.

How to Script the Move Instead of Rebuilding It

Both platforms are API-first, so this is an export, transform and import — not a hand rebuild. Then parallel-run and swap tags zone by zone.

Export and rebuild

~1–2 weeks

Connect and configure

~1 week

Test and switch

Per zone

  1. 1

    Export from AdButler

    A day

Pull zones, advertisers, campaigns and creatives through their API.

  2. 2

    Bulk-import into Epom

    About a week

Transform the export and create the same entities through Epom’s API.

  3. 3

    Remap your demand

    A few days

Direct deals become campaigns. Programmatic partners reconnect as OpenRTB.

  4. 4

    Configure and validate

    A few days

Link each banner to its placement, set targeting and pricing, then run Diagnostics and test the tag on a live page.

  5. 5

    Parallel run

A few days to two weeks

One low-traffic zone on both platforms. Compare on ratios, not exact numbers.

  6. 6

    Cut over, then finish

    Per zone

Swap tags one zone at a time. Then re-set conversion tracking, check revenue parity and retire the account.

What your engineer will want to know
  • AdButler zones map to Epom Site → Zone → Placement, matched on size and type.
  • Advertisers, campaigns and items map to the advertiser → campaign → banner.
  • Both platforms expose REST entity CRUD for all of these, which is what makes the export-transform-import approach possible instead of rebuilding by hand.
  • AdButler targeting and key-values become Epom targeting rules and custom parameters.
  • Rich media and VAST creatives are re-uploaded rather than transferred.
  • The billing basis changes from ad requests to impressions served, so model the new invoice on last month’s impression count, not request count.
  • Export reporting before you cancel; Epom does not import it.

Let us answer the questions that come up on every call

01

Why do networks leave AdButler?

Two reasons come up most: the price once the add-ons are counted, and the advertiser and user caps on the lower tiers. Both bite as a network grows rather than on day one.

02

Can I script the migration?

Largely, yes. Both platforms have full REST APIs, so you can export your AdButler entities, transform them, and bulk-create them in Epom instead of rebuilding by hand.

03

Can I run Epom and AdButler at the same time?

Yes. Serve one zone through Epom while AdButler handles the rest, for as long as you want.

04

What happens when I pass 10 advertisers?

Nothing. There is no advertiser or user cap on any Epom plan — the bill is set by impression volume alone.

05

What does AdButler do that Epom doesn’t?

It forecasts inventory on every tier, where Epom has impression and daily limits but no forecasting. It is also purpose-built for retail and commerce media, and its white-label domain starts lower.

06

What happens to my reporting history?

Export it before you cancel. Epom does not import AdButler historical data.
