Aloe Polyphylla "Spiral Aloe" sharp-edged thick leaves form a spiral either clockwise or anti-clockwise. They begin to spiral when they become from 8 to 12 inches (20 and 30 cm) in diameter. The Basotho people believe the direction of the spiral indicates the gender of the plant but in-fact the flowers are bisexual. Each plant has about 150 leaves. That's why its name is "polyphylla". I.e. "poly" means "many" and "phylla" is a Greek word for "leaves".
