Part 1/5 of The Kite Runner sets up Amir as the main character and narrator. Amir narrates as an adult living in the US, looking back twenty five years to his childhood in Kabul, Afghanistan. The main characters and their backgrounds are laid out and already is it made clear that the Pashtuns and Sunni Muslims discriminate terribly on the Hazaras and Shia Muslims. The Pashtuns being more 'arabic-looking' and the Hazaras coming from more eastern Asia and being more 'asian-looking'.
