"VHS Memories" is a synthpop song by the British band Emile’s Telegraphic Transmission Device. Written by the band's founder and lead singer Daniel Ian Williams, the song was conceived during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020 in County Durham. Initially part of the sessions for the band's seventh album following their sixth album, "Lost in the Ether," the song was set aside as the album's direction shifted. "VHS Memories" is scheduled for release in August 2024 on 7” eco mix colour vinyl, with "Lovers on TV" as a double A-side sister single.

Background and Development

Daniel Ian Williams composed "VHS Memories" during a period of intense creativity induced by the lockdown in 2020. The song, alongside "Lovers on TV" and "Again," was written during sessions for the band's anticipated seventh album. However, as the recording process evolved, Williams felt that the material was diverging from his intended direction for the album, leading to the shelving of these tracks.

Composition and Recording

"VHS Memories" falls within the synthpop genre, featuring a blend of nostalgic synthesizer sounds, rhythmic bass guitar, and vocals. A notable element of the song is the use of a Linndrum plugin, which replicates the classic sounds of vintage drum machines. The song was both mixed and engineered by Williams at his home studio, The Punch Room II.

Lyrics and Theme

The lyrics of "VHS Memories" narrate the story of a man reliving past romantic experiences recorded on a VHS tape. The song employs the metaphor of magnetic video recording to highlight themes of fading memories and the erasure of people from one's life. This metaphor underscores the ephemeral nature of memories and the way they can deteriorate over time, much like the quality of old VHS tapes.

Release

"VHS Memories" is set for release in August 2024 on 7” eco mix colour vinyl, reinforcing the band's commitment to environmentally friendly practices. It will be paired with "Lovers on TV" as a double A-side, reflecting the interconnectedness of the two songs that originated from the same creative period.
