This year’s orientation is a special collaboration between the CTLT and UBC Human Resources, reflecting our joint commitment to supporting both your professional growth as an educator and your personal well-being as a member of our community.

Reimagine the first day of class through group discussion and a mapping activity. You’ll create a plan to align day 1 student experiences with your course goals, content, and learning activities. Come prepared to share your experiences and tips, and to focus on a specific course you’ll be teaching.

Explore the four lesson basics, learning outcomes, active learning, assessment and motivation, and how to use these to plan well-aligned student-centered classes. This session will provide a high-level overview and important pointers with the goal for you to apply these in your lesson planning.

Whether you are building your first course or refreshing an existing one, this session will guide you through the essential steps to set up a well-structured, accessible, and engaging course. You will learn how to add and format content such as pages, assignments, discussions, and quizzes, while incorporating Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles to ensure an inclusive experience for all learners.

Teaching a large class can be a daunting task that requires different skills than you might use with smaller groups. This session provides space for a discussion about the challenges and benefits of teaching in large classes and how to improve your large group teaching skills.
