Iridesc marks the debut full-length from Exzald S, the solo project of Paris-based producer, musician, and vocalist Sarah Foulquiere.
Employing an intricate blend of hypnopompic textured sound design and idiosyncratic abstracted songwriting, Foulquiere crafts dreamlike worlds where the voice leads fluid, evolving and spacious sonic narratives. Moving between the ethereal and the unpredictable, her work feels pulled from the subconscious – elemental, intuitive, and immersive.
On Iridesc, she constructs a rich sonic environment built entirely from software and voice. Each composition emerges from layered improvisations, often over a hundred tracks deep, shaped through detailed sound sculpting and emotional instinct. The voice moves freely between clarity and abstraction, sometimes intimate and exposed, sometimes dissolving into pure sound.
“I see the voice as an instrument,” says Foulquiere. “It lets me express more than words can – through texture, rhythm, and timbre.”
The album draws influence from Autechre’s structural freedom, the luminous choral music of Hildegard von Bingen, and the vocal expressiveness of Liz Fraser, Kate Bush, and Sidsel Endresen. The result is a record that is a synthesis of electronic composition, new age music, sound system culture, ambient experimentation, and raw emotional presence.
Written and produced during a period of loss and transition, Iridesc became an anchor for Foulquiere. “I held on to the idea of this sound like a lifeboat,” she reflects. “Even when I couldn’t make music, it was there as a kind of lighthouse.” The album traces a movement from grief to renewal, mapping interior landscapes through sound.
About Exzald S (Sarah Foulquiere):
Based in Paris and originally from Provence, Sarah Foulquiere has worked across multiple projects exploring voice, electronics, and experimental songwriting.
As Exzald S, she released the 2021 collection Serene Transfer Scheme, co-produced “Wondertomb” with Aho Ssan for the Berlin Atonal Compilation, contributed lyrics and vocals to “Away” on Aho Ssan’s acclaimed album Rhizomes, and remixed “Blind Power” for Simulacrum Remixes on Subtext. She also appears alongside Nexcyia and mu tate on the 2025 collaborative album Labège.
Earlier, under her Fawkes moniker, Foulquiere co-wrote and co-produced songs with Jlin on Planet Mu’s 20 Years compilation and on Jlin’s Black Origami (Planet Mu, 2017). The same year, she self-released the Death is the Goddess mixtape on Halcyon Veil.
Across all her work, Foulquiere’s music remains grounded in an exploration of the voice — as both an emotional medium and a compositional tool — and in her fascination with how sound can trace the contours of inner life.
