Cats

Completely unscientifically, we declare that cats are fandom's favorite pets. There have been many Big Name Cats in fandom, including:

• Peggy Gillespie, a member of First Fandom.
• Bill Donaho’s Habakkuk, for whom he named his fanzine.
• Jackson Sims, an athletic Siamese who attended conventions with Pat and Roger Sims.
• Bill Bowers' black Responsibility.
• Roger Weddall's Typo, who won a controversial Ditmar Award for Best Fannish Cat at the Australian Natcon SunCon in 1991.
• Constantinople, a three-legged cat who spawned a convention.
• Maxwell Silver Hammer Smith, Birman owner of Dick and Leah Smith, described in "Planet Catnip: My Life with an Alien Cat" by Leah A. Zeldes in the anthology Cat Women: Female Writers on their Feline Friends.

Fandom's crazy cat ladies:

• Mary Elizabeth Counselman, a Weird Tales author who collected black cats.
• Joni Stopa, whose many cats were one reason so many Wilcon attendees slept outdoors in tents.
