The original 1950's case was marginally taller than our version. The height has been adjusted to allow the case to sit in the boot on top of the side screens (part of the weather protection that fits on the doors where you'd expect wind up windows or electric windows to be in a more modern vehicle), or the side screens to be laid on top of the case. We also plan to make a case for the side screens to be stored in, but that will most likely be out of letherette utilising an old tonneau cover.
The TR2 / TR3 Suitcase if the boot of a TR2. (Note: The depth of the boot (front to back) is slightly deeper than it ought to be as the fuel tank cover is not in place yet. So from front to back the case length (when compared to the bracket that the cover fixes to, is actually just about perfect. )
This is a photo of the case alongside other leatherwork projects I have completed in the 15 weeks since starting the leatherwork course.
Linings in place. The case just needs some final finishing off in the form of surface treatment (waxing) and burnishing of edges. After that some straps to limit the opening of the lid will be added.
Fitting the red goatskin lid lining. Again this is held into place with glue ahead of being stitched. The excess lining will be trimmed off then tucked in behind the closure piece where it meets / overlaps the base lining. This joint is necessary due to the average size of goat skins. As it was, out of 6 goat skins I only had 2 pieces big enough to do the bases, followed by two pieces big enough to do the lid.
Fitting the case base linings which are red goat skin (with 3mm automotive foam padding behind them) to the case ahead of stitching the closure pieces into place. These hold the linings into place on the finished case, but glue is used to locate them temporarily.
Trying the red closure pieces for size. These have been stitched together using box stitch, similar to the rest of the case.
The case now has the pull fitted. It is lined in red goat skin. This pull helps you get the case out of the boot of the TR2 / TR3 when the actual handle is obstructed by the bodywork.
The front of the case lid has now been trimmed to the correct length. You can really see the shape of the finished article forming now.
This is one of the sides off the second case which has not been assembled yet. I've laid out the closure piece to show how it will look once stitched into place.
The case taking shape. At this point the sides have all been boxed stitched into place, and the front of the lid is waiting to be cut to length.
One handle completely finished and ready to stitch on to the case.
Both handles wet moulded into shape and held in position on a piece of Durilium bar. The bases that fit onto the case are cut to shape from hide and ready for stitching / wet moulding.
Both handles trimmed in kip, stitched and cut to length ready to be wet moulded into a curved shape.
