After picture - I was able to create a more useful storage system on the wall of the stairwell. I used pine boards from Lowes and some simple pocket hole joinery for the shelves and uprights as well as the stretcher boards between the sides that were screwed into studs. I also added shoe molding "rails" on each wall to hold 5 - 2' x 4' panels of 1/8" ply wood to cover the back of the stairs from the stairwell leading upstairs.
