African Art
The African Art collection at PAGODA RED starts with Ann Nathan - a visionary gallerist, a true collector, the mother of our founder Betsy Nathan - her love of African Art developed early in her journey while carefully selecting and studying objects over many decades. She had deep relationships with African dealers and an eye for the most unusual. We are thrilled to carry on Ann’s vision by presenting to you an eclectic mix of fine art and folk, iconic furniture, and other extraordinary objects.

On Display : Yoruba Egungun Dance Costume
On Display : Yoruba Egungun Dance Costume Rich in color, texture, scale, and lore, this unusual textile work was once donned by twirling Yoruba dancers in the Egungun masquerade. The intricate layers of colorful cloth panels would fly freely in the breeze, bringing blessings from their ancestors. It is rare to see such an example outside of a museum collection.
NUPE VERANDA POST
Hand-carved with an abstract design, this tall wooden post is an architectural support beam attributed to the Nupe people of central Nigeria. Like much of Nupe art, support posts are typically carved with simple geometric forms, rather than figurative designs that depict a spirit or reflect familial histories. We’re captivated by the elegant spiral twist of this minimalist sculpture and the subtle chiseled texture of the hand-carved surface.
