about

'modular sleep patterns' was an album and project I made with my friend Stijn Hüwels. I recorded these various elements late at night on a Sony TC-377 reel-to-reel and they became the building blocks of that album. I quite often start projects with massive tape mixes, just having fun with the onboard EQ of whatever I'm recording into and then telling Stijn to do what he likes with it (a common collaboration technique of mine). Working with Stijn is a dream as we have similar sensibilities and bring out the serene in each other, which is a real blessing.

'mono sleep patterns' is the original mix I made of these late-night sketches on the TC-377. The TC-377 is in fact a stereo reel-to-reel but I wanted to tie the albums together in a fun way so 'modular' (Stijn's side) became 'mono'. After spending years in storage, discovering these old tapes again has been such a refreshing way to reapproach my music and creative sensibilities.

I lost a lot of confidence a couple of years back after a hugely personal hit through the label I run. It led me to closing the label site, getting rid of my studio, deleting my drives of music, going off social media and just totally isolating myself to the extent I was unable to leave my own home. It was a period that crushed me mentally and physically. It took a lot of love and time to get back up, and I honestly can only hope and pray anyone who has to go through such experiences has people close to help and support them. I had friends and family really step up, and as I slowly found myself again after a period of wander/wonder (and a lot of counselling), I started to fall deeply in love with music again.

Obviously once you delete those files that's it really, but then when you reach out it turns out people were once again there. I had tapes from friends I'd given away, recordings they'd saved and my wife and I had stored the old recordings in the attic and on shelves. If it weren't for tape and analog formats this music would be long gone yet I am able to go over it again and really appreciate what I have created. The music is something I am at once deeply proud of but also am disconnected from in a way that leaves me to just appreciate it came through me somehow. And I know that sounds a bit 'out there' but I truly believe that. I don't hold any great ownership over this music on a metaphysical level but am very glad I just get to share it here.

I'm a huge fan of the natural tape hue and tone, so presenting the music in this early tape-based stage is a real treat for me. I've found the music itself, the inherent noise in the recordings themselves, so deeply cathartic and healing.

I've always loved pitching things in wild ways, and this is no exception. Whilst we edited *some* of the pitch adjustments and harsh cuts on 'modular sleep patterns', I've kept it all in for 'mono sleep patterns'. There's even a track I always loved of vocals and drums I had for years on tape that I just pitched and messed with from the days when I could make more noise in my home. I still get to play with tapes quietly at night though, for which I am most thankful.

I'm having the most fun uncovering the tapes from these projects that I haven't heard for years and transferring them over into the digital domain. This one comes with the full mix I made originally in two parts, as I needed two tapes (there's a decent gap between the two parts in the middle I chose not to edit out).

As always, thank you. This is such a pleasure to share with you who care to listen or randomly stumble across this music on your auditory nomadic wandering. I hope you like this warm tape goo. x Ian
