Talking David Cronenberg’s A Dangerous Method

I thought he announced last fall he was retiring?? Which was horrible news to me as I am a HUGE fan of his films, but it's no shock that it would be Cronenberg who would bring him back.

Quote:
Remember Mike Fleming’s story last month about Christoph Waltz, who won the Best Actor Oscar on Sunday for his portrayal of a Jew-hunting Nazi, being lined up to play another psychopath in Water For Elephants? Well, it turns out that in going for that role, he dropped out of playing one of the most influential Jews in history. Waltz was going to star as Sigmund Freud in David Cronenberg’s The Talking Cure, due to start filming on May 17 for 10 weeks. Based on the play by Christopher Hampton, the pic is about the conflict between Freud and his pupil Jung.

Waltz’s departure left the producers scrabbling for a replacement. There were fears they would have to scrap the German/Canadian co-production completely. “You’d have thought Waltz wouldn’t want to be typecast as a sadist,” one of the filmmakers grumbled to me. Happily, Viggo Mortensen, who worked so memorably with Cronenberg on Eastern Promises, has just replaced Waltz. Mortensen will star as Freud opposite Michael Fassbender as Jung. Keira Knightley will play Sabina, a disturbed young woman brought to see Jung by her father. Jung and Sabina have an affair, and the producers are promising me “lots of spirited sex”. (Viggo had that other spirited sex scene with Maria Bello in Cronenberg's A History Of Violence.)

If the movie’s going to be as hot as the producers hope, I can’t help but think that as a title The Talking Cure is a little flaccid. Surely the filmmakers can come up with something better?

Good news, I always look forward to a Viggo Mortensen film, and this one sounds promising.

I do too, which why I became worried when I heard he was retiring, but at the time it sounded more like he was too burned out from press junkets and constant touring, that he just needed some time off at his ranch. I hope he and Cronenberg will still do Eastern Promises 2 down the road. But I will be happy with Mortensen making even just one great film every few years.

Well, the film really had me until Keira Knightley. Still sounds interesting, very interesting actually. I just hope they don't ask her to do anything that needs high excalibur I mean caliber acting. Freudian slip

Someone had to do it

I can't blame Christoph Waltz for dropping the roll, I guess he didn't want to become "that nazi guy"

A Dangerous Method is a much better title than the Talking Cure. Those pictures look pretty good too.

Official Synopsis:
Quote:
A beautiful young woman, driven mad by her past. An ambitious doctor on a mission to succeed. An esteemed mentor with a revolutionary cure. Let the mind games begin…
Seduced by the challenge of an impossible case, the driven Dr. Jung (Michael Fassbender) takes the unbalanced yet beautiful Sabina Spielrein (Keira Knightley) as his patient. Jung’s weapon is the method of his master, the renowned Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortensen). Both men fall under Sabina’s spell. Into the mix comes Otto Gross (Vincent Cassel), a debauched patient who is determined to push the boundaries.

Jung gives in to lust and a passionate affair begins. Sabina becomes the catalyst for Jung’s inspired theories. Meanwhile Freud goes further, delving into Sabina’s brilliant mind until she can take the situation no longer. The bonds between the trio shatter. Driven by desire and revenge, with their reputations at stake, Freud and Jung embark on a battle of wills.
In this dangerous game of sex and intellect, the price will be Sabina’s soul.
Quote:
“The new film is typical of Thomas’s unconventional projects, but it looks set to become a controversial release next year. It features scenes of sado-masochistic sex between Knightley and Fassbender and has a screenplay based on Christopher Hampton’s play The Talking Cure. It reveals that Jung was drawn into a protracted affair with Knightley’s character, Sabina Spielrein, in a breach of the relationship between an analyst and his patient. It was a lapse that is often held responsible for the breakdown of the friendship between Jung and Freud.”

I'm a huge fan of psychology so I'm looking very forward to the film and I like Michael Fassbender a lot but he's picked so many unlikable roles in the past and I hope this movie isn't him just being a horny guy, again shirtless and being a douche.

I though Hunger was a bit lame, Fish Tank was absolutely terrible, I was actually disappointed that he resorted his talents to that crap, being a pedo in Jane Eyre, doing Jonah Hex he's either done shitty movies or played unlikable characters and he's coming out with a new movie where he's addicted to porn. It's like =|

I thought he was good in Inglourious Basterds though and he looks like an awesome Magneto and lol how can I forget him in 300? haha

I'm going to TIFF and I'm definitely seeing this there. Basically the entire reason why I'm going.
