Roman Holiday is without question one of the greatest romantic/comedic movies ever created, yet here we are many years after Blu-Ray was invented and it still is one of the missing jewels in this category. All three main actors are unfortunately long gone and the real sad part of this, this film is hardly ever seen on TV. With so many wishing to see this movie on Blu-ray, I just hope folks at either Criterion or Paramount reads this and comes to terms to release this film to fill the hearts of many of us who would graciously pay a fine price for the pleasure of watching this great film again and again.

Blu-ray Archduke

It would be Paramount. For all we know, Criterion and every other label wants it released, but they can only release what is being licensed out. If Paramount doesn’t license or release it themselves then it will stay in the vaults.

Paramount is just being weird by not putting this on blu-ray. They have it on iTunes with plenty of extras -- all of what's on the DVD and then some. So they have a whole package compiled and then apparently opted to not release it along with their other Hepburn titles.

Here are the extras in iTunes. Some are general enough that they may just already appear on other movie releases.
• Audrey Hepburn: The Paramount Years - 29:56 • Remembering Audrey - 12:12 • Rome with a Princess - 8:57 • Dalton Trumbo: From A-List to Blacklist - 11:56 • Restoring Roman Holiday - 6:50 • Behind the Gates: Costumes - 5:31 • Edith Head: The Paramount Years - 13:44 • Paramount in the 50s - 9:34 • and trailers I might have been wrong about "all of what's on the DVD." The DVD case lists "Remembering Roman Holiday Documentary" as a supplement. |

As owners, Paramount has that right to control its distribution for business purposes but whatever is gained from that holding strategy, certainly will lose more its credibility as a firm that should be committed more to provide its greatest customers (fans) the opportunity to own and eternally enjoy this classic film in their collections. I think if Paramount can release its greatest and most highest rated film ever "The Godfather I and II" in multiple blu-ray releases, then by all means it should at least release Roman Holiday just once on Blu-Ray.

Thanks for posting this.
It’s a crime that Roman Holiday is still not on Blu-Ray with the format being something like 13 years old. It’s one of the most iconic romantic comedies/ dramas ever with two of Hollywood’s greatest stars. It makes absolutely no sense financially that Paramount doesn’t put this out... or especially didn’t put it out about 5-10 years ago or so. |
