Australia Roma (2018)

Roma on Blu-Ray - Exclusive to JB! March 11th 2020

With his eighth and most personal film, Alfonso Cuarón recreated the early-1970s Mexico City of his childhood, narrating a tumultuous period in the life of a middle-class family through the experiences of Cleo (Yalitza Aparicio, in a revelatory screen debut), the indigenous domestic worker who keeps the household running. Charged with the care of four small children abandoned by their father, Cleo tends to the family even as her own life is shaken by personal and political upheavals. Written, directed, shot, and coedited by Cuarón, Roma is a labor of love with few parallels in the history of cinema, deploying monumental black-and-white cinematography, an immersive soundtrack, and a mixture of professional and nonprofessional performances to shape its author’s memories into a world of enveloping texture, and to pay tribute to the woman who nurtured him.

This gives me hope that The Irishmen will receive a local release(even if it is barebones) as Roadshow will now release this and have a distribution deal with STX films

Cover art is up on JB's website - is this looking like Australia's first criterion release?

Assuming its going to be the Criterion print yeah? Are there any other releases of this they would use for this local release?

The film was finished in a 4K DI. Both Criterion and Roadshow will use the DI to create their respective BD releases with slightly different encoding

It will be quite cool if this is the actual cover and roadshow has somehow struck a deal to release criterion titles down under

I doubt that’s what’s happening (ie no Roadshow deal with Criterion).

Warner is releasing the disc in European territories and that same cover art is used (including a spine number) so presumably they are just distributing the Criterion disc sans digibook packaging and booklet/book.

Re Roadshow’s release, aren’t they effectively Warner’s new release distributor is Australia?

They're Warners' everything distributor. So yeah, they'll be releasing it via Warner, not directly from Criterion.

I really hope they're not gonna leave the classification partially covering up that Criterion Collection heading on the side, that's just lazy. I find it slightly odd how they're leaving the Criterion Collection heading on there as well which again makes me ask, who did Warner secure the rights from? I'm also curious as to if it's just going to be a clone of the Criterion disc with the same special features and encode...

$50 says someone found the Criterion art and threw a classification logo on it so they could have something to put on the website.

All the other international Warner releases have that same artwork, I wouldn't be especially surprised if it actually does have that artwork

Picked this up today, our version is the international WB disc, the subtitle options confirm this, there is a 12 page fold out booklet and all of the extras from the Criterion are included

I find it kind of odd how they left so much Criterion branding on the disc. Also kind of annoyed that Roadshow couldn't be bothered to scale down the classification logo to not cover up the Criterion banner on the side.
Never saw this on Netflix. Will be grabbing it on Blu-Ray today or tomorrow

I'm not terribly optimistic, but I hope that this means that we'll be getting some more Criterion releases going forward.

They can't legally do that.

While they are usually a standard size, some releases have scaled down classification labels. To cite a couple of recent examples, The Simpsons: The Complete Nineteenth Season and Lady Bird have scaled down classification labels.

Yeah, the size of that label can be quite variable. Umbrella and Disney always seem to get away with making them noticeably smaller.
