USA The Invisible Man Appears / The Invisible Man vs. The Human Fly (1949-1957)

Quote:
Finally released outside Japan for the very first time, these unique riffs on H.G. Wells' classic character (though undoubtedly also indebted to Universal's iconic film series) are two of the earliest examples of tokusatsu (special effects) cinema from the legendary Daiei Studios. In The Invisible Man Appears, written and directed by Nobuo Adachi in 1949, a scientist successfully creates an invisibility serum, only to be kidnapped by a gang of thugs who wish to use the formula to rob a priceless jewel. In addition to being the earliest surviving Japanese science fiction film ever made, the film's entertaining special effects were an early credit for the legendary Eiji Tsuburaya, five years before he first brought Godzilla to life. Eight years later, Mitsuo Murayama's exciting The Invisible Man vs. The Human Fly tells the story of a series of mysterious murders where the only clue is strange buzzing noise at the scene of the crime... could this be linked to secret wartime experiments in shrinking humans to the size of insects? And can a scientist who's just invented an invisibility ray be the one to stop it?

I'm a big toku fan, but I've never seen these, nor do I know anything about them (other than hearing the titles once or twice). Another instant preorder for toku from Arrow!

So, does a human fly (like in the Vincent Price versions) fights an invisible man? That's what I was hoping for going by the title of the second movie. :P
The description seem to indicate a very different movie than what the title always implied.
Really intrigued by these.

Apparently it's a serial killer that can shrink down to the size of a fly and kill people without being seen

Default Whoa OK, I didn't know Japan did their version of the Invisible Man

So Spiderman wasn't the only western character to get a "Japanization" adaptation. For those of you that don't know what I'm talking about, I'll explain it below. But back on topic, I didn't know the Invisible Man got his own Japanization adaptation that pre-dated Toei's Spiderman (1978-1979) and also pre-date Toho's King Kong, and Frankenstein's Monster.

So I take it The Invisible Man in the Japanese adaptation doesn't have a giant robot like Spiderman did

Oh yeah and about the Japanese Toei's Spiderman thing. There's a interesting documentary how that came to be on Disney+:

If you don't have Disney+, Toy Galaxy's YT channel talked about it (abeit not 100% accurately):

So anyway, nice to know Spiderman was not the only given a Japanese adaptation treatment, Invisible Man got the same thing and pre-dated even Spiderman.

Very fascinating, and happy to see this getting a US/NA blu-ray release for the first time.

Default OK, Daei wasn't alone doing a Invisible man adaptation, Toho did one too

I just found that Daei wasn't the only studio that did a adaptation of The Invisible Man. Toho seem to have done one too under the name, The Invisible Avenger. That one was directed by Motoyoshi Oda (the same guy that directed Godzilla Raid Again, the sequel to the 1954 Japanese original). So nice to know the Invisible Man got multiple "Japanization" adaptation.

I just love that cover. I wish they used the artist Graham Humphreys more often. They used to use him nearly every month, but it's been a decent amount of time since he did something for Arrow.

King Kong... Dracula (also released by Arrow)... kaiju Frankenstein. Plenty more Japanese versions of international characters slipping my mind.

I'm pretty sure that Dracula from the Bloodthirsty Trilogy is not Dracula despite the English title. That could be a disciple of Dracula. I know because I watched both Lake of Dracula and Evil of Dracula on Prime Video when it's on there. Despite both titles has Dracula in it's name, it does not have a "Japanization" of Count Dracula. Even on IMDB's Lake of Dracula, the main vampire character is not even called Dracula in the Japanese language.

But yes, we do have a "Japanization" version of King Kong, and Frankenstein. But no "Japan-ize" Dracula.

That was based on the Rankin/Bass King Kong cartoon which featured a villain named Dr. Who. Not the British character.

That's not the Doctor Who the sci-fi and British people know. This Doctor Who is based on a villain from Rankin-Bass/Toei's King Kong Show.

Thumbs up

Amazon preorder is up. The cover art only references the first film, with no mention of the second. I came here to verify that it's a two-film set. The product description does say, both films on one disc. So all good, pre-ordered!
