Lonesome Dove Blu-ray

The Amazon pre-order and listing is there for Aug. 19. Seems to be priced the same as a day and date but it is a 2-disc special edition.

Preceded highdef -- the last DVD did not exactly inspire awe in terms of video quality, and that's putting it mildly.

Additionally, the Blu-ray version also notes a "Full 6-hour commentary from director Simon Wincer" among the extras which is not listed among the supplements on the SDVD edition.

Package art is not available for either version yet. The Blu-ray disc release of Lonesome Dove - 2-Disc Collector's Edition has a list price of $39.92. However, you can pre-order from Amazon for $27.99 as of this writing. The SDVD edition isn't listed on Amazon yet but will sell for $19.95. DVD Empire is taking pre-orders for the SDVD release for $14.17 at this time."

One of my yearly must-watch titles.
I will be interested to see whether the 1.78 presentation is protected for or cropped 4:3.

As long as it's not a cropped 4:3, I'm sold. I'm a recently converted Western fan (within the past few years), and this is among my favorites. I still need to pick up the BD version of The Wild Bunch, but I'm a bit hesitant because it was only recently that I got the 2-disc remastered DVD.

Depends.

The only example of a TV movie done for 1.85:1 I can think of is V, cause Kennth Johnson always thought of it as bigger, and it was standard practice at the time to send a lot of TV movies overseas to theaters

I would bet cropped from 4:3, but I will wait to pass judgement. This was always about characters and their values for me, not grand vistas.

I recall ("Ah, but I was so much older then") having seen The Wild Bunch 8 times in one year. I too had purchased a Peckinpah (he can do no wrong IMO) box set of his westerns early 2006. I started purchasing BD in July '06. Yes I've The WIld Bunch on BD.

I'm likely to buy it again, should a provably better version emerge. (I'm such a loser). It's the price you pay for caring about some things.

If you haven't already done so, I recommend at least a viewing of The Searchers and the soon to be released The Professionals.

June is going to be an expensive month for me, as outside of the contemporary film I want like There Will Be Blood and Persepolis, there are all those damn war movies like Patton and The Longest Day. I guess the kid has to skip her piano and dance lessons.

Thanks for the recommendations. I vaguely remember seeing The Searchers at some point a few years ago, but have recently thought of giving it another look (now that it's on BD). The Professionals I was unaware of, and will look out for.

The Searchers is after all made by John Ford who made many great films and deals with classic Ford themes of Family, manhood, honour and explores the issue of racism, beautifully shot in Monument Valley I might add, and the BD is of surprising quality for an old timer.

The Professionals has Lee Marvin, Burt Lancaster, Robert Ryan (The Wild Bunch) and Woody Strode & Claudia Cardinale (both of Once Upon a Time in the West). Good fun, how could you go wrong?

Re 4x3 or 16x9 - it all comes down to how it was originally shot. If it was shot and framed for 4x3 then I would want it on Blu ray in that format. Also I'm wondering if this will be true hi-def or just upscaled?
