Wildflowers in my Garden

This week the topic of Makrotex is NATURE. I photographed some self-seeded
wildflowers in my garden. At the moment it is a yellow wave.

Verbascum nigrum - Tummatulikukka is a bee magnet and grows allover.
I let the seeds ripen and then just throw them around, so easy and every year they appear.

Hypericum perforatum - Mäkikuisma grows in poor soil and appears year after year.
The bee was too busy for me!

Sedum acre grows wild in Finland. These are planted in the holes of concrete blocks.

Among campanulas Campanula persicifolia is my favourite: the flowers are big
and the blooming lasts long. I have it in blue and white, but they don’t bloom fully yet.
That’s why an old photo of a romantic bouquet with Louise odier.
It fits well for I celebrate today my 29th wedding anniversary.

La Vie en Rose

I could easily say that my life is like La Vie en Rose,
because the Hurdal rose - Norwegian rose Hurdal blooms already abundantly
and looks stunning! It is an Alba hybrid, very high, about 4 m which makes it challenging
to photograph - it blooms high against the blue sky! Hurdal is inmensely vigorous,
almost thornless & has mild fragrance - and needs no care whatsoever.
I only cut away dry older branches. Dag Lyngar from Norway reports:

'Hurdalsrosen is perhaps the biggest alba in the World. It's believed that this rose came from the Giessen area in the south of Germany. But this rose doesn't any longer exist there. In Norway it is one of our most common roses. Hurdalen is a nice valley in Norway and the rose was brought to Norway about 150 years ago with a young seaman who fell in love with the young daughter of the priest in the valley Hurdalen.'

Also Rosa glauca roses have started to bloom. They are also high and large and grow near
the borders of our property. Dart’s Defender is in bloom as well, still some Rosa rugosas to come.
Physocarpus opulifolius ’Dart’s Gold’ is beautifully in bloom as well.

Legendary Cats And Their Humans - Book Review

Legendary Cats and Their Humans by the Germans Andreas Schlieper and Heike Reinecke is a fun book that is sure to be an entertaining reading for every cat lover. The writers have included thirty famous people who have been more or less crazy about their cats. Writers have depicted cats in their works and artists in their art. Gallery of the persons is so versatile that anyone can find a celebrity of interest. Among the authors are e.g. Haruki Murakami, Ernest Hemingway, Herman Hesse, T. S. Eliot, Patricia Highsmith, Charles Bukowski and Doris Lessing; artists e.g. Frida Kahlo, Paul Klee and Franz Marc. Of course, there are many other famous names involved: Winston Churchill, Isaac Newton, and the afterwords still list great many cat lovers that didn’t fit in the book.

The chapters in the book are structured so that the reader gets information about the person’s love  of cats and at the same time a brief overview of his or her life. There are a lot of quotes and they bring the person closer. One could say that Hemingway’s cat madness went a bit over board. He had up to sixty cats and he built an own residential tower for them in his Cuban finca. Hemingway bred multi-toed or polydactic cats. Today, Hemingway’s home in Key West, The US is open to the public and forty cats still live there!

Paul Klee: Cat and Bird 1928, MOMA

Personally, I wanted to explore more about artists who loved cats. One of them is the German Franz Marc (1880-1916), who founded the group Der Blaue Reiter. He is famous for his blue horses and other animals described in a colorful and cubist way. The German-Swiss Paul Klee (1879-1940) was also one of the blue riders. His view of the cat is funny: the idea of birds fills the cat’s entire brain! Based on my observations on Sissi, this is definitely true!

In Western symbolism, the black cat foretells evil, it literally represents evil, the devil, death, or at least uncontrollable lust. In the Middle Ages, the black cat was considered a companion to witches, and many still feel awkward when a black cat crosses the road - especially if it runs from left to right.

Frida Kahlo: Self-portrait with a thorn collar 1940

I did not know that the father of Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) was German. In one of Kahlo’s symbolist self-portraits, a monkey and a black cat sit on the artist’s shoulders. The black cat in Mexico is also an amulet of love that brings good luck. There are various interpretations of the butterflies flying around Kahlo's head - they have been thought to symbolize change or, in the Christian sense, even the resurrection or the soul of Aztec culture.

I didn’t even remember that in the film loosely based on a work by Truman Capote (1924-1984), Breakfast at Tiffany's appeared an orange tomcat. In the film, it is anonymous, but in real life, the cat was played by Orangey, the cat star of many other films, too. Orangey was awarded the PATSY Award in 1962 - Picture Animal Top Star of the Year. In this Youtube link, Audrey Hepburn hugs the wet Orangey. He is said to have done his job very professionally: he remained in the scene even after the filming lasted for hours, but left the studio as soon as they ended.

Here are a few highlights from this fun book. Personally, I learned a lot and had fun! The book is not yet available in English as far as I found out.

Charming Blooming June

My neighbourhood is eclectic as to housing. The properties used to be bigger,
but during the recent years they have been divided. So, there are old houses with old gardens
and new, very modern houses with smaller, recently planted gardens.
This diversity makes my neighbourhood interesting, not at all monotonous.
Right now trees and shrubs pamper the eye.

I don’t know the history behind this sad sight. Around this house there is a spruce hedge.
Fore some reason it has not been cut properly, and when the spruces then shadowed
way too much, they have cut them in this ugly way...

Happy - Summer is here!

Finally we Finns can say that summer is here!
This week is going to be sunny with temperatures around 20 C.
My garden joy of the week are these sunny yellow wood tulips, Tulipa sylvestris.
They are so delicate with bending stems, the flower is small, but never mind!
I love these better than big flowered tulips and they also spread.

The cherries are starting to bloom and ground covers please the eye...

Confusing March

This March we have wittnessed the whole world gradually shutting down before
a common pandemic and the number of victims exploding. Without going into details
the Finnish government has taken similar drastic & extreme measures as governments elsewhere.
Most of the Covid-19 cases are in my home province Uusimaa and traffic in and out
has strongly been limited. The state of emergency shall most probably be extended today.
Elderly & risk groups are asked to stay at home - but walking in the nature is still allowed!

Before the closure of museums & theatres  I visited Art Museum Sinkka at Kerava and
National Theatre in Helsinki where I saw a classic tragicomedy called Gabriel.
I took you also to Luxury treasures of Sinebrychoff Home Museum.

Now that you may have more time to read, I would love to recommend you Patria
by Fernando Aramburu - a thick book of over 600 pages but so well written! Aramburu was born
in San Sebastian, Basque Country, Spain - so he knows his theme. Patria tells about the terrorism
of ETA and how ETA broke the warm friendship between two families and split a small village
in two opposite fronts.  Translated as Homeland available at Amazon.
Five star reading experience for me ❤︎

What may April bring?
I wish you and your family health & hope, sun & green sprouting spring.
Did you know that  Flowers Can Dance?
