Friday Bliss #208 - Green Memory Mix from Florence

I spent a few days in Florence in the autumn of 2019 - before the pandemic, war in Ukraine

and the energy crisis. It was an unforgettable vacation. I saw so much, visited art museums,

churches and admired the city & the Arno, as my small apartment was near to Ponte Vecchio.

Because I’m narrowed down to the house right now, I needed something to lift up the spirits

and was viewing my photos and thought to share some green views with you, too.

Please note the people on the street at the low part of the photo. The wall was very high.

How on earth they are able to cut the grass on a slope steep like this!

Here at home Sedum Herbstfreude is blushing. This is a plant that tolerates every draught!

Otherwise the garden is a sad sight - it is so dry that many perennials are drooping their leaves.

I wonder how many plants will be lost due to the draught of this summer.

Autumn is a book lover’s Christmas! There are constantly new books to be released

by Finnish writers & publishers. The latest book read is a novel The Cook of Miss Stein

by talented Leena Parkkinen. The story tells about the Paris of the 1930s, Gertrude Stein,

Alice B. Toklas and their Finnish cook Margit. The lovestory of Stein and Toklas was brave

at the time when homosexuality was a crime.

Friday Bliss #108 - Herbstfreude / Autumn Joy

I decided to make still one garden bouquet for you.

Sedum Herbstfreude is a fantastic plant: needs no care, is easy to add and makes

a long lasting cut flower. I added to it Calamagrostis acutiflora ’Karl Foerster’.

I have Herbstfreude growing on sunny & dry spots. In two years it grows

from a tiny clump to a handsome plant. I have used it in many of my garden bouquets,

as green and red. Let this be an experiment: let’s see how long it lasts on my terrace table.

Clematis Negritjanka is still blooming on the trellis.

I used my love sign saying farewell to the summer!

Sparkling New Year!

In my opinion ☆ SILVER ☆ goes so well to New Year.

With these photos I’ll show you what happens to my house plants in a second.

This silver sprayed sedum was only a little while without its protective lantern

- and the traces of Sissi’s little teeth can clearly be seen :DDD

I don’t usually buy plants that are sprayed or artificially coloured,

but this sedum fits so well in its lantern home.

We have this great Finnish poet who writes her poems in Turku / Åbo dialect,

a city on the west coast of Finland - Heli Laaksonen.

I am not able to translate the dialect, but here a rough translation for you.

The original is hilarious indeed!

ADVICE FOR THE NEW YEAR

Take the cone out from the shoe.

Shed the water off the boots.

Lift the bucket from your eyes.

Drink the cup empty.

Be joyful, be bright, be cute.

Don't put your hand on a circular saw.

Don’t drop the ax on your feet.

Don’t forget the keys at home.

Don’t loose the hearts given to you.

Signs of autumn - Syksyn merkkejä

My garden looks wet, autumn like and really messy - in fact pretty sad.

But I don’t want to think of the sad sights now, instead show you some blooms that still delight me.

Lilium orientale
On the contrary to my doubts each new lily bulb is blooming. The overall sight is not so nice
because everything around these fantastic lilies looks withering and brown already.

Sedum Herbstfreude
A year ago I donated a lot of these to my daughter’s new garden.
Then divided what was left in tiny clumps that have grown extremely well in this dry corner.

Calamagrostis Karl Foerster has decided to show some late blooms...

Parthenocissus has started to show some red color...

There are a plenty of seeds to pick up:
Alcea rosea, Digitalis, Verbascum nigra, Lychnis coronaria, Aquilegia... you name it...

Soon time to plant some late autumn plantings...

Floral Bliss #84

For me yellow is the color of spring & late summer.
I don't like big splashes of yellow but a hint here and there is ok and belongs to August.
At the moment Rudbeckia laciniata 'Goldball' and Ligularia przewalskii are blooming.

The latter needs moist soil and loves half-shade, and also selfsows eagerly.

I made a simple bouquet added with sedum 'Herbstfreude'.

Keltainen kuuluu mielestäni kevääseen ja loppukesään.

En pidä suurista keltaisista kasviryhmistä - ripaus siellä täällä riittää.

Tällä hetkellä kukassa ovat kultapallo ja valtikkanauhus,

joka nuupottaa lehtiään auringossa. Meillä se kasvaa talon pohjoispuolella varjossa.

Simppelissä kimpussani on lisäksi syysmaksaruohoa.
