Always start with leveled tiers. If you skip this step, you’ve already set yourself up for failure. Invest in a level that you only use for your cakes. It’s a small investment with a huge return. 2. Measure your support dowels to the height or SLIGHTLY taller than your tier. Never use supports that are shorter. Essentially, you want the top tier to sit on the dowels and not the cake. I’ve made this mistake so you don’t have to. I use wooden dowels because I can sharpen them to penetrate my cake boards that sit in the middle of my cake
